Brother and Dr. Ivorite L. Scruggs and Soror Ruth Tappe-Scruggs made history as the first husband-and-wife duo to serve as National Presidents of NPHC organizations.

Dr. Scruggs, an Original 1914 Alpha Chapter Charter Member, served as the 2nd National President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (1917–1919). Years later, Ruth Tappe-Scruggs of Alpha Chapter served as the 6th National President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (1926–1930).

Together, their leadership helped shape the foundation of Black Greek–lettered excellence and service, proving that purpose, partnership, and progress can walk hand in hand.

Soror Mamie Harrington Townsend answered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call to uplift our people by founding Auntie Mame’s Child Development Centers in 1969, creating spaces that nurtured self-discipline, self-respect, and excellence in Black children.

What began as one center grew to serve over 550 students, leaving a lasting legacy of service, leadership, and community empowerment. An honorary member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, her impact lives on through the generations she helped shape.

Every minute, a woman loses her life to cardiovascular disease, and heart disease remains the number one killer of women in the U.S., accounting for 35 percent of deaths globally.* These sobering facts sparked National Wear Red Day, an American Heart Association initiative observed each year on the first Friday in February to raise awareness and inspire action.

Today, the women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated are wearing red and invite you to stand with us. When women come together, awareness becomes action, and action saves lives. That’s not only the Finer way, but also the Power of S.H.E. in motion: showing up, speaking out, and supporting healthier futures for women everywhere.
You can take action by shopping at CVS Pharmacy and Big Lots during American Heart Month, where your purchases help raise funds and awareness for heart health.

Ready to go even further? Commit to a heart-healthy lifestyle by joining the American Heart Association’s 60-Mile Walking Challenge and pairing your movement with smarter food choices.

Honorary Soror Yvonne B. Miller was a trailblazing educator and public servant who made history as the first Black woman to serve in both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly.

Her leadership opened doors, reshaped policy, and proved the power of representation in action. A legacy rooted in service, courage, and commitment to community, she didn’t just take a seat at the table, she changed it.
