ART CIRCLE | Introducing Matthew Huval

Matthew Huval is a Lafayette-based visual artist and musician whose creative practice spans animation, graphic design, songwriting, and performance. His interest in making art began early, creating animations and music on his family computer before later studying visual arts with a focus in animation at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Today, Matthew plays guitar and sings for Genuine Mustard, a solo project turned quartet that has toured throughout the Southeast and Midwest since 2024. The band is currently working on their debut album, Afraid and OK. Alongside his music, he continues to stay connected to Lafayette’s creative community through live shows and by creating gig flyers for local artists and bands.

LINEAGE PAST PROJECTS | Honoring artists. Inspiring the next generation.

With LINEAGE 2026 just two weeks away, we’re taking a look back at the projects, workshops, and community experiences that have carried the impact of LINEAGE beyond the awards ceremony.

LINEAGE is so much more than one evening. Each year, our honorees extend their impact by sharing their knowledge, creative practices, and experiences with our community through workshops, classes, and special programs.

In 2024, Cissy Whipp led a dance workshop series and Robert Dafford invited participants into his process through a mural painting workshop.

In 2025, Francis Pavy shared his relief printmaking practice through a three-part workshop series, while Grace Hamilton-Mayfield curated The Creole Zydeco Experience: Roots, Rhythm & Heritage, bringing generations together through Creole cooking, Zydeco dance, and more.

And with our 2026 honorees, Chubby Carrier and Lynda Frese, that tradition continues.

LINEAGE celebrates local visual and performing artists who have contributed a lifetime of creativity to the Acadiana region while creating opportunities for their knowledge, stories, and artistic practices to continue shaping future generations.

2027 PROJECTSPACE RESIDENCY | Applications are officially open!

The 2027 Basin Arts ProjectSpace Residency Applications are now open, with a new twist!

The 2027 Studio Series cycle will support TWO artists, providing each with dedicated studio space, support to create new work, and an exhibition at Basin Arts.

Throughout January and February 2027, the selected artists will work adjacently in separate, partially open 12’ x 12’ studio spaces within our gallery, developing their individual practices side by side. The work created during this time will then be exhibited in the gallery throughout March and April. Collaboration between the two artists is optional, but encouraged.

Each selected artist will receive:
✨ $500 stipend
✨ Partially open 12’ x 12’ studio space
✨ Guidance + research support
✨ Studio visit with a local curator
✨ Access to movement classes + basic tools
✨ Opportunities to engage with the community throughout the residency

Artists outside of the Acadiana region are welcome to apply, though housing cannot be provided.

ART CIRCLE | Introducing Savannah Raley

Savannah Raley is a digital communications specialist, graphic designer, and event coordinator currently based in New Orleans. A former Basin Arts Operations and Engagement Manager, Savannah has built a creative career across the arts, nonprofit, hospitality, and restaurant industries through design, content creation, and visual storytelling.

Though she may not consider herself a traditional artist, Savannah’s creative practice is rooted in graphic design, typography, photography, video, and the ways those mediums can shape how people experience a brand, organization, or community.
Savannah found her place in the arts by bringing her love of design, typography, and video editing into work that supports artists, nonprofits, restaurants, and other creative spaces.

And if you’ve been following Basin Arts for a while, you might recognize some of Savannah’s work already. From artist opportunity guides to BARE Walls collection features and other graphics across our platforms, Savannah helped shape the visual storytelling of Basin Arts during her time here.

Now based in New Orleans, Savannah serves as Head of Socials and Community for Brechtel Hospitality while continuing to create design and content through .

BARE WALLS | Grant funding from the Maraist Family Foundation is helping Basin Arts strengthen the infrastructure behind BARE Walls and support the program’s continued growth throughout Acadiana.

This grant is helping Basin Arts build the administrative capacity behind BARE Walls by providing seed funding for a new part-time Program Administrator position. As BARE Walls continues to grow, this added capacity will support day-to-day operations, relationships with participating artists and businesses, and continued expansion throughout the community.

Since launching in 2018, BARE Walls has distributed more than $195,000 to local artists and now supports nearly 100 artists across 20 satellite gallery sites throughout the region.

We are so grateful to the Maraist Family Foundation for investing in the continued growth and long-term sustainability of BARE Walls and the artists it serves.

OPEN CALL | DanceLab Choreographer Residency

Basin Arts is now accepting applications for the Fall 2026 DanceLab Choreographer Residency, a nine-week creative residency supporting emerging and established choreographers in the research, development, and presentation of new dance work in Acadiana.

From September 14–November 14, selected choreographers will receive dedicated time, space, and production resources to experiment, collaborate, and deepen their choreographic practice. All dance genres are encouraged to apply!

Selected choreographers receive:
✨ Up to 18 hours of rehearsal space at Basin Arts
✨ Two public performances on November 13 + 14
✨ Professional photography + videography documentation
✨ A $100 performance honorarium
✨ An artist-centered environment focused on process, experimentation, and new work
