UPCOMING | Join us for a conversation centered on the veillée, a South Louisiana tradition where family, friends, and neighbors gathered to share stories, music, culture, and community.

As part of Bob Borel's ProjectSpace Residency exhibition, this discussion will explore how the spirit of the veillée has evolved over time, examining the ways people connect through faith, language, storytelling, and social spaces, and how technology has transformed these traditions.

Moderated by Philip Frey, the panel features Becca Begnaud, Jean Bertrand, Bob Borel, and Kevin Domingue.

Last week, Basin Arts was proud to be part of the State of the Arts Symposium hosted by the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

The annual symposium brings together artists, educators, community leaders, and cultural advocates to explore the role arts and culture play in shaping Acadiana's future. This year, our Founder and Creative Director, Clare Cook, joined the conversation as a workshop facilitator alongside William H. Dodge for Bringing Public Art to Life. This session offered an interactive experience inviting participants to dream up a new public art project from the perspective of an artist, a community member, or the project facilitator.

We're grateful for opportunities like these to learn, connect, and advocate for a thriving arts ecosystem in Louisiana. Thank you to everyone who participated and engaged!

THIS SATURDAY | Join us for ArtWalk at Basin Arts

Don’t miss Bob Borel's ProjectSpace Residency in-progress exhibition of Mom Mom’s: The Sacred Ordinary and also, a small solo exhibition from BARE Walls artist, Gary Pilcher.

Mom Mom’s: The Sacred Ordinary is an immersive installation that reconstructs Bob’s Cajun grandmother’s living room and kitchen, honoring a disappearing era when homes served as gathering places for coffee, conversation, storytelling, and community. Blending living history, personal memory, and contemporary art, the exhibition invites visitors to step into a familiar space and reflect on the traditions that continue to shape Acadiana culture. If you haven’t seen it yet, The Advocate recently featured a story from Jan Risher about Bob’s project.

In our Studio Gallery, visitors can also view a solo exhibition of landscape photography by Gary Pilcher. A 2013 graduate of SCAD, Gary’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout the South and explores a deep connection to place through striking imagery of the natural world.

NEXT WEEK | Join us for the in-progress opening of Mom Mom's: The Sacred Ordinary, a ProjectSpace Residency project by . This exhibition is an installation that blends living history and communal art, a reconstruction of Bob’s Cajun grandmother’s 1980s living room and kitchen; a space that was decorated in the 1950s and never changed.

This immersive environment will function as artwork, social reenactment, and a third space, evoking a time when homes served as communal hubs for gathering with: coffee, conversation, food, and the occasional game of cards. As a living history interpreter, Bob has created historical displays at Vermilionville to interpret local culture. This project brings that experience, along with his background in varied art installations and curation, into more personal and cultural territory. Rather than reenacting distant or dramatic events from the past, this piece honors recent Cajun history that’s quietly slipping away.

Basin Arts’ ProjectSpace Residency is a dynamic and evolving interdisciplinary artist residency program in partnership with the Hilliard Art Museum. The residency provides professional artists from the Acadiana region with the structure, space, and support for research and development of new artistic work while deeply engaging the community in the creative process.

Art Circle | Introducing Zavier Taylor

Zavier Taylor is an advanced, industry-focused dancer with experience across multiple styles, specializing in hip-hop, jazz, and contemporary. Known for bringing strong energy into every class and rehearsal, Zavier pushes dancers to grow both technically and creatively while keeping training fun, motivating, and welcoming for everyone involved.

After dancing for almost 10 years and training at a professional level for the past 2 years, Zavier has continued to develop a deep passion for both performance and choreography. What started as a love for movement quickly turned into a passion for creating, leading, and bringing people together through dance. Recently stepping further into choreography, Zavier has focused on building a creative environment where dancers feel confident, inspired, and free to express themselves.

Along with teaching and building a creative community, Zavier also serves as a coach for the Carencro High School Dazzlers, helping young dancers grow in both skill and confidence. Zavier also had the opportunity to perform during the Super Bowl LX festivities, further gaining experience in the professional dance industry.

With dreams of becoming a tour and commercial-style dancer, Zavier hopes to continue expanding creatively, inspiring others through movement, and creating opportunities for dancers to connect, grow, and do what they love most.
