“Dr. Francis dedicated his life to expanding access to education and creating opportunities for others,” Mayor-President Monique Boulet said in a statement. “It is only fitting that this library, a place of learning, discovery and community, bears his name for generations to come.”

Francis received 42 honorary doctorates and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 2006. During his lifetime, he served on 54 boards and commissions and advised eight U.S. presidents on education and civil rights issues.

On May 16, the Library has a millage renewal up for a vote. It's the very last item on the ballot, and it may be on the back page if you received a mail in ballot. Please support our library system by voting yes!

A Lafayette Parish library tax responsible for 65 percent of the funds that keep your local library doors open is going to be on the May 16 ballot.

Our 2026 Annual Awards Luncheon was a full and meaningful afternoon celebrating the people who help make our libraries stronger.

We were proud to recognize this year’s honorees:
• Heather Degeyter — Foundation Award
• Women of Wisdom — President’s Award
• Cheryl Taylor Bowie, Right Angle — Major Donor Award

We were also honored to welcome Mayor-President Monique Boulet as our keynote speaker, sharing her perspective on Lafayette’s future and the importance of the Northeast Regional Library in growing access to our library system.
