From author Nathan J. Runda, whose “Forgotten Sailors: The Confederate Navy in the Trans-Mississippi West” appears in the Spring 2026 edition of Louisiana History: “Forgotten Sailors is a narrative history about the Confederate Navy’s attempt to defend Arkansas, Texas, and western Louisiana during the Civil War. The Confederate Navy’s failure to successfully defend this region was due to a lack of competent naval officers, competition with the Confederate Army for scarce resources, and the misallocation of said resources on ironclad construction projects on the Arkansas and Red rivers.”
