Black FAME is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that finds, verifies, and shares free resources across four pillarsโ€”Finances, Awareness, Media, and Educationโ€”so that people in our community always know where to turn. We started in Lafayette during the COVID-19 pandemic because valuable resources existed in our community that we believed too often went overlooked, so we decided to help make them easier to find.

Louisianaโ€™s new closed primary system reportedly caused confusion at polls across the state today. Election commissioners reported delays from having to explain the new process to no-party voters, and clerks of court said there was widespread confusion statewide.

The Secretary of Stateโ€™s office projected roughly 28% voter turnoutโ€”a significant drop from the typical 50% seen in past non-presidential primary elections.

Polls closed at 8 p.m.

โœ”๏ธ Registered with no party affiliation in Louisiana? Hereโ€™s what you need to know before heading to the polls today, May 16.

Louisiana voters registered with no party affiliation will be asked to complete a one-page declaration form at their polling location.

For the U.S. Senate race only, no party voters must declare a party preferenceโ€”and that choice locks them in for both the May 16 election and the June runoff. It does not permanently change your party registration.

All registered voters, regardless of party, can still vote on five constitutional amendments.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Visit GeauxVote.com or download the Geaux Vote app to review your sample ballot, check your polling location, and find more information.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Today is Election Day! Louisianaโ€™s closed primary is underway, and donโ€™t forget, five constitutional amendments are also on the ballot.

Before you vote, review the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisianaโ€™s (PAR) quick analysis of what a vote for and a vote against means for each amendment.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ REDISTRICTING UPDATE | May 14, 2026

The Louisiana Senate passed a new congressional map Thursday on a 27-10 party-line vote that would reduce the stateโ€™s majority-Black districts from two to one. The map now heads to the state House for consideration.

The vote comes two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court declared Louisianaโ€™s existing congressional districts an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. Gov. Jeff Landry has also suspended Saturdayโ€™s U.S. House primaries to allow lawmakers time to finalize new maps for the 2026 midterm elections.

The story continues to develop. Stay informed.
