ON THIS DAY in 2005, the Native American statue atop Endicott Rock, welcoming boats & beachgoers at the Weirs Channel, was unveiled. The statue was a gift to the city & the state by WAC to replace the previous statue of "Captain Jack" which was vandalized beyond repair. WAC commissioned Bob Morton, an fine art professor emeritus at Plymouth State University, to create the bronze statue. ON THIS DAY in 1872, the first Mount Washington steamship launched from Alton Bay. Owned by the Boston & Maine Railroad, it quickly became the prominent ship on the lake because of its speed, traveling at about 20 mph. Today, the M/S Mount Washington has daily departures from Weirs Beach. Photo credit to www.weirsbeach.org
