The La Verne Historical Society welcomed columnist David Allen and Route 66 collector John Atwater for its June Member & Community Meeting.

Allen, a columnist for the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, shared several of his Route 66 stories as the historic highway celebrates its 100th anniversary. His presentation featured local landmarks and businesses, including the Cucamonga Service Station museum, the Great Wall of Los Angeles mural, Pomona’s former Henry’s Drive-In, the Mt. Baldy Drive-In and La Paloma Mexican Restaurant, the city’s oldest restaurant.

Atwater also shared selections from his Route 66 memorabilia collection, which was recently displayed at the Los Angeles County Fair. Items included maps, license plates, postcards, matchbooks, sheet music, ashtrays and a Route 66-themed board game.

Thank you to David and John for sharing their knowledge and helping preserve the stories of Route 66 in our region.

Flashback to 2017 LVHS La Verne Magazine feature:
In 2017, La Verne Magazine highlighted the work of the La Verne Historical Society and its mission to preserve the city’s history while strengthening community connections.
Since 1973, the Society has worked to save and share La Verne’s past—from identifying and marking historic homes through the Bronze Marker Program to organizing tours, events and educational programs for the community
The article also featured LVHS president Sherry Best, who emphasized expanding community outreach and continuing the work of preserving the stories and places that make La Verne unique. As she shared, “Our history is our roots that anchor us to our present.”
Take a look through the slides to revisit this feature from La Verne Magazine.

📚A visual history of La Verne: In 2020, City Historian Bill Lemon and the La Verne Historical Society published "La Verne" as part of the Arcadia Publishing Images of America series. The book tells the city's story through captioned images, from its Mexican rancho days and citrus industry era to post-World War II suburban growth, showing how La Verne has kept its small-town charm and strong sense of community.
"La Verne" is available for $20 and is signed by the author.

✨Highlights of Society Membership:
Members of the La Verne Historical Society enjoy six annual newsletters titled "Legacy Links." In addition to feature articles of historical interest, the newsletters recognize new and life members, trace the progress of the Society's International truck restoration and report on current events of potential historical interest. The Society also displays artifacts at city venues, plans to expand to elementary school libraries and hosts a lecture series exploring the history of cities along the citrus belt.

🛻The Story Behind Our Truck:
The truck featured in the logo of the La Verne Historical Society is a 1938 International once owned by Wesley “Inman” Conety, the Society’s second president and La Verne’s Citizen of the Year in 1975.
Conety drove the truck more than 960,000 miles before selling it to the Society for its original price of $1,350. After extensive restoration, it now appears at community events such as the Fourth of July parade and helps share La Verne’s history with students and residents.
Through this truck, the story of Inman Conety and the history of La Verne continue to travel through our community.
