John, an Army veteran who spent a year in Afghanistan, describes what it was like meeting his service dog, Bloom, for the first time:

"When I walked into the kennel, there she was—Bloom—jumping up and down, just springing and hopping all over the place. I remember thinking, no way. To be greeted with that much excitement and affection was incredible.

"[Trainer] Karen took videos of us walking around together later. I had my head down and the biggest smile on my face. It was just amazing to be welcomed by something so loving—by a dog who didn’t even know me yet, but was still overflowing with joy, jumping and hopping, just happy to be there in that moment."
