The Southeast Colorado Creative Partnership (SECCP) hosted the final Friday art show with The ART Project at the newly restored Plaza Block Building at 10 E. 1st St. (US Highway 50) in La Junta on September 25. The event was well attended and showcased numerous local artists.

Shiflett Art Exhibition Coming to the Plaza Block Building on Friday, October 9, 2026

The Plaza Block Building in La Junta will host an exhibition featuring the artwork of Southeastern Colorado artist, Kirk Shiflett from October 9–23, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 9, from 6–8 p.m.

Shiflett’s work is inspired by his lifelong connection to wildlife and the natural world. His detailed paintings often combine realistic wildlife imagery with symbolism and imaginative elements, inviting viewers to consider the relationship between people and nature. Working primarily in oil on canvas, Shiflett creates pieces that are both visually striking and thought-provoking.

The community is invited to attend the opening reception, meet Kirk, fellow art enthusiasts, and experience Shiflett’s work in the historic Plaza Block Building.

Artist Statement:
"My work is a commentary on the environments we all live in and human interaction with wildlife and their habitats. I integrate elements from influential painting traditions, such as the Dutch school or Renaissance. My work, usually done in oil, is highly detailed and includes elements of surrealistic narratives. The animals I paint take on anthropomorphic qualities as they are thrust into human environments and made to cope with changes to our and their habitats."

The Art Project at Plaza Block!!

Local artist Cody Miell invites the community to his upcoming exhibition, “Here and Now."
The event will be held from 6 to 8:30 pm on September 12 at the Plaza Block Building, 10 E. First St. (Highway 50) in La Junta.
From original artwork and hand-painted signs created with a variety of mediums, Cody’s collection showcases his creativity, craftsmanship and unique artistic voice. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase his work, which also includes limited-run screen prints of T-shirts and posters.
The evening will include a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and drinks.
The “Here and Now” Art Show is open to the public and everyone is welcome.
