Riverfest Commodores - La Crosse

Each year, past Riverfest Commodores choose a new Commodore who has led in our community and gone above and beyond to give back.

They represent and promote Riverfest year-round and actively raise funds for their Foundation, which helps Kids In Need. In 1983, the La Crosse Area Convention Visitors Board created Riverfest to provide a local family festival around the 4th of July in Riverside Park. There was no Commodore or First Mate in 1983. This changed, however, in 1984, when the Junior Chamber International (JCI) decided

to honor a couple who has provided leadership in the community by giving back and making a difference. In addition, this couple would help represent Riverfest and promote it during the event and the entire year in many ways to include parades, banquets, fundraisers, etc. The first Commodore and First Mate in 1984 was Phil & Barb Quillin, who were very involved in the community and instrumental in the beginnings of Riverfest. It is truly an honor to be selected as the Commodore and First Mate, who of which are selected by the past Commodores. When selected as the Commodore and First Mate, the couple makes a 6 year commitment to be fully active in supporting Riverfest and the Commodores. However, all living Commodores and First Mates remain active and have strong ties to each other and the community, making a big impact in the Coulee Region. In recent years, the impact of the Commodores has only grown with the establishment of the Riverfest Commodore’s Foundation, Inc., focusing on providing assistance to kids in need https://www.riverfestcommodores.com/foundation/

We were humbled to receive the Adult & Youth Award tonight from the Boys and Girls Clubs as a result of the impact of the Commodore Foundation and our Kids in Need Fund! Thank you to the Boys and Girls Clubs for the recognition!!

🍀 What a great day for a parade! 🍀

The Riverfest crew had a fantastic time at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade today! Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate, wave, and enjoy the festivities with us. It’s always great seeing our community come together for events like this.

Now we’re one step closer to summer… and Riverfest 2026! We can’t wait to celebrate with you July 1–4 on the La Crosse riverfront.

The La Crosse community has lost a true legend (1993 Commodore), and our hearts are broken. Pat's impact and legacy will live forever, and we are deeply grateful for all he gave to this community and Riverfest. There will never be another Pat Stephens. "Positive Pat" wil be profoundly missed, our thoughts and prayers are with the Stephens family!
