Powell Poage Hamilton Neighborhood

Sharing messages from our City and County leaders regarding the recent tragedy in our neighborhood. Be sure to reach out and support each other during this difficult time.

Edited to add comments that didn’t forward from District 9 City Council Member Aron Newbury and District 9 County Board Supervisor Angie Manke:

To our PPH and District 9 City and County neighbors,

The last 48 hours have been heartbreaking for our neighborhood and our city. Rashied Schuelke was 15 years old. He was a former student of Hamilton Elementary with deep ties to our neighborhood, killed steps from his school and the park where kids play, in broad daylight. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

As Mayor Washington-Spivey said, we must come together as a community and "stand together and support our young people with guidance, accountability, and positivity. Let's show them there's another way."

None of us has a quick fix or immediate answer to loss like this, but we cannot give in to hate, anger, or division. We must support one another and continue working toward a better path forward. That can only be accomplished if we get out from behind the comfort of our keyboards and show up, be present, in person, in our communities.

Please check in with your family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones. Grief, shock, fear, anger, and sadness are all normal responses to tragic events like this, and support is available for students, families, friends, and community members. You do not have to go through this alone.

If you are experiencing grief or need support, please reach out to resources available through La Crosse County

Good Evening Neighbors,

We are overdue for our every other month PPH meeting, tomorrow SEP 15. However I have another commitment I cannot reschedule and therefore will need to cancel the meeting.

However despite this, I have two additional opportunities for neighborhood events that may interest you to attend instead.

1. Last opportunity to visit Lincoln Middle School before its redesign. The School District of La Crosse is offering neighbors and community members once last tour of the building before renovations begin to convert it into affordable housing. The tours will be this Wednesday, September 16th, from 6-8 PM.

2. Next phase of City Planning Zoning updates will be a joint meeting with Washburn, Downtown Neighborhood and PPH at 630 at the American Legion. All are welcome to attend. Washburn has a few neighborhood items to address prior to the Zoning portion starting at 645 but all are welcome to attend.

Our next PPH meeting will therefore be November 17th hopefully, if no other conflicts arise. Please send any agenda item suggestions to me along with any urgent matters I can push up to our NRO or city sooner if necessary.

Lastly I apologize for no notification of the cancellation of the July meeting. We had a death in the family and in the flurry of arrangements I forget to cancel it and was off a week in details on the meeting. I apologize if anyone showed up and we weren't there.

Take care and have a good evening.

Angie M
Chair
