Independent School Alliance Pasadena Info-Session April 30th!

Independent School Alliance identifies, supports, and connects racially underrepresented and economically under resourced students and families in our cities to independent schools because all students should have access to the premier world class institutions that prepare global leaders.

To learn more about the Independent School Alliance and how to become a member of the Cohort, please RSVP for an information session. A select group of our Member Schools will be present at each session to share more information on their respective communities. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd7F8zOZGUA82UJy7LHZZYfzNvjsnAzrMbsQu2aUS8K2clCYg/viewform

In early July, 10 students traveled to the Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park as part of Prep’s Global Studies project on climate change. In partnership with Earthwatch, students spent time out in the field, laying down quadrats and transects to collect data at tidal pools around Acadia, encountering Maine's wildlife from green crabs and mussels, to porcupines and even a mink!

In the lab, they worked on water filtration, data entry, and dissection/digestion of mussels for a microplastic research project. Students helped in researching the long-term changes in Maine’s tidal ecosystem due to decreasing pH levels caused by the Greenland glaciers melting.

“Our knowledge on climate change now extends beyond the classroom and reaches far into the world of devoted professional and citizen scientists who work every day to discover the effects of greenhouse gases,” Matthew Lavichant ’24 and Riya Koh ’23 wrote.

In June, eight students traveled with Global Studies Coordinator Ingrid Herskind and Spanish teacher Manuel Nuñez to the U.S.-Mexico Borderplex, participating in one of Prep’s two Global Studies projects this summer. The project partnered with the World Leadership School, whose Borderplex program helps students understand the personal experiences of people working at and crossing the border.

Students met with U.S. Border Patrol agents and federal judges to learn about controlling the border, as well as nonprofits and religious organizations, including the Raices Del Saber Xinachtli Community School and ElPasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank, that work on behalf of migrant workers, undocumented immigrants, and asylum seekers.

They spent time sharing stories and making meals together with local residents of El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, NM, who shared their own immigration experiences.

“This project gave us a firsthand glimpse into the complexities of immigration and the struggles for those working on both sides of the issue,” Herskind says.

Robert Cartwright '14 took the helm as this year's coach, tapping into his basketball chops playing for Stanford and UC Irvine (he helped Irvine upset Kansas State in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Basketball Tournament). Cartwright is also the new boys varsity basketball coach starting this fall.

Prep’s Athletic Council on Leadership (ACL) helped host the 18th annual JP Blecksmith Memorial 5K in San Marino on July 4th, which honors J.P. Blecksmith '99, a Marine 2nd Lieutenant who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

“All of ACL was grateful to volunteer for such a meaningful cause and I’m super thankful for all the work my classmates did to make the 5K a success," shares ACL Community Leader Andrew Jordan '23.

When Rob Cobb '96 thinks back to his time at Prep, it's the teachers and mentors who helped shape his path in life.

"Midge Kimble taught me invaluable lessons, fostering inquisitiveness and helping me frame future academic success," he says. "When my father passed away, it was the Prep community that was there to help guide me through a very difficult time, and for that I will forever be grateful. Returning to campus as an assistant football coach and periodically lecturing to students has helped me appreciate how Flintridge Prep impacts the current student body."

We love hearing memories and stories like Rob's about how their Prep experience, a teacher, or a mentor impacted them for life.

We hope you'll make a gift to the Annual Fund before June 30! Alumni - let's set a record of 22% alumni giving in 2022! Click the link below or text 22PREP to 41444 to make a gift.

Why are you Prep for Life? We have been asking alumni and parents to share their thoughts.

“It is through Prep that we met one another,” friends Stacey Gomez Webb ’92 and Shirin Karimi Webb ’92 share. “Prep was the foundation of our teenage years. Our time was formative socially, academically, and athletically, and it gave us the grit and fortitude to march forward to college and beyond.”

These lifelong friendships are why Stacey and Shirin are Prep for Life—and why they give back to Prep.

We're calling on all alumni to help us set a record and increasing alumni giving to 22% in 2022! We need 411 more gifts by June 30 to help us meet our goal. Make a gift today! Click the link below.
