For decades, KCA recognized the intersection of Kula Highway and Ōmaʻopio Road as the most dangerous traffic location in our community. Accordingly, the KCA Board ensured that installation of traffic lights at that intersection was a high priority for the State Department of Transportation ( Department of Transportation. After years of advocacy and lobbying, KCA received word from DOT that improvement projects—including traffic signals, highway lighting, guardrail updates, acceleration and de-acceleration lanes, and more—will begin Monday, December 1 and is projected to continue through October 2026. 🚗🚴🚦 Read on for details!

As we celebrate this victory for our community, we want you to have all the info you need to keep your commute easy. Here’s what we know:

• Delays and closures will be updated and posted on Fridays for the following week at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/.
• Beginning Monday, Dec. 1 the northbound lane at the intersection will be closed from 8:30am to 3:30pm on weekdays, except state holidays.
• Traffic will be alternated in the open lane.
• The shoulder along the northbound lane at the Kula Highway and Ōmaʻopio Road intersection will be closed 24/7 to allow the work.
• With the shoulder closure, bicyclists may be using the travel lane. The law requires drivers to give the cyclists a 3-foot clearance when passing.
• The posted construction speed limit through the project is 25 mph.
• The project includes installation of a traffic signal, highway lighting, guardrail upgrades, left-turn lane on Kula Highway, embankment widening, and a retaining wall.

All work is weather permitting. Visit Hawaii Department of Transportation here on Facebook or on X/Twitter for updates!

After community members raised concerns about a lack of transparency and a rushed process, the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources is giving community members more time to weigh in on a proposal that would take 3,434 acres of historic lands called Kamehamenui out of agriculture and instead pave the way for a state forest area run by DLNR, like the Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area.

The KCA board still has questions regarding potential wildfires, loss of agricultural lands, and DLNR’s capacity to steward this land, at a time when its other lands such as Polipoli have been overrun by invasive species.

You have until November 23 to make your voice heard by sharing your thoughts with (as an FYI, there isn’t a link/easy way to find the portal to share comments on the Kamehamenui web page). But we made it easy for you — share your feedback here:
