Healthy Balance Meals | 313 Court Ave, Sevierville, TN 37862 The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs. Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's bus

iness and professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service, in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. Although Rotary clubs develop autonomous service programs, all Rotarians worldwide are united in a campaign for the global eradication of polio. In the 1980s, Rotarians raised US$240 million to immunize the children of the world; by 2005, Rotary's centenary year and the target date for the certification of a polio-free world, the PolioPlus program will have contributed US$500 million to this cause. In addition, Rotary has provided an army of volunteers to promote and assist at national immunization days in polio-endemic countries around the world. Local Club Officers

TRAINING OF LEADER DOGS FOR BLIND EXPLAINED AND DEMONSTRATED FOR ROTARIANS
Connie Emmons brought Leyah, a leader dog for the blind in training, to a meeting of the Sevierville Sunrise Rotary Club and explained how dogs are trained for that role. Emmons lives in Sevier County. She said dogs are kept in training until they are 15 months old, then undergo more training before they are ready to be a leader dog for someone who’s blind. Most leader dogs are Labs, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds. Clients don’t pay for the $65,000 training or the animal itself. Emmons said donations help fund the nationwide program. Emmons was introduced by Rotarian Faye Hoechnedel.

COUNTY LANDFILL OPERATIONS EXPLAINED TO ROTARIANS

Sevier County’s landfill handles over 300 tons of trash every day and converts about 60 percent of it into compost which is then made available to the public free of charge. Tom Leonard, the longtime director of the landfill on Ridge Road, spoke to the Sevierville Sunrise Rotary Club about the operations. The compost produced by the landfill can be used on farms, for erosion control and to apply to topsoil mixtures. The landfill also recycles over 4,000 tons of cardboard every year. The recycling drop-off center on Henderson Road in Sevierville accepts plastic jugs, plastic bottles and aluminum cans. The one in Gatlinburg also accepts motor oil. Leonard, left, was introduced by Rotarian David Reller.

This morning Rotarians showed up with servant hearts and willing hands to make a difference right here in our community.

There’s something special about starting the day alongside people who believe in Service Above Self. Before most of the town was fully awake, we were already working together, encouraging one another, and investing in something bigger than ourselves.

Projects like this remind us that impact doesn’t always require a huge stage — sometimes it’s built in small acts, steady effort, and teamwork. And when we do it together, it multiplies.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time and energy this morning. You are the light our community needs.

If you’ve been looking for a way to get involved and serve locally, we’d love to have you join us at our next project. Come see what Rotary is all about. 💙

ROTARIANS PREPARE CHRISTMAS FOOD BOXES -- A HOLIDAY TRADITION
Each Christmas season members of the Sevierville Sunrise Rotary Club prepare dozens of food baskets to give to needy families and individuals. Rotarians find out who’s in need, and the club uses that to determine the number of baskets to prepare. Rotarians and family members gathered Wednesday night in the stockroom of the Sevierville Food City store, which gives the club a grant each year to help pay for the food. Each box includes fruits, vegetables, bread, eggs, milk, potatoes, stuffing mix, flour and a turkey. Those on hand then form an assembly line of sorts to put the items in the boxes for delivery that night or the next day.
