Have you been snorkeling yet this year? Right now is the perfect time! If you’re lucky and look enough, you may see some minnow nests from above water 👀

We’re so thankful our Field Coordinator Andrew ZImmerman (.zimmerman.photography) could capture these spectacular photos of this male Hellbender eating his own mucus layer. Here’s the story for these photos:

“For the first image I just saw a Hellbender yawning, then all of a sudden I could see his mucus layer peeling off of his face. Before I knew it the current stripped it from his entire body, then he turned around and gobbled it off before it drifted away. The second image was a different male, I approached him after I suspect a normal fight with another male. His mucus layer was just wafting off of his body in the water and he just turned around and started eating it.”

As we continue to rear Hellbenders in our facility we hope our vital observations can provide some insight into this weird, snot covered, star of our streams in Appalachia.
