The disciples started with the wrong understanding, but they had the right heart posture.

This Sunday we dove straight into John chapter 9, where Jesus heals a man born blind. The chapter begins by setting the stage with Jesus’s disciples asking a curious question as they pass by a man.

“As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” John‬ ‭9‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

They didn't know the answer, so they brought their question to Jesus. And that's the posture of a son — not knowing everything, and being humble enough to recognize it.

Jesus continues:

“We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.” - ‭‭John‬ ‭9‬:‭4‬-‭7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This man’s long-awaited miracle started with a question — but what if the disciples didn’t ask? What if they kept their curiosity to themselves and ignored the situation? Would Jesus have healed him? Or, if He still healed Him because the Father sent him, would the disciples have truly noticed and therefore have written about it?

Don’t stop being curious with God. Don’t give up on asking him questions. He is a generous Heavenly Father that loves to hear our questions — even if our understanding is wrong.

At this point in the Scripture the argument between Jesus and the Pharisees escalates.

They say, “Abraham is our father.”

And Jesus basically says, “If Abraham were your father… you’d look like him.”

That’s sharp. But true.

Because true lineage is proven by resemblance.

Abraham believed God. Trusted God. Welcomed God’s Word. He had a specific character and nature about himself.

These men?

Reject truth.
Resist God.
Seek murder.

Same claim. Different resemblance.

Nothing like the nature and character of Abraham.

And Jesus exposes the issue:

Identity is not proven by heritage.
Identity is revealed by resemblance.

Then Jesus says the hard thing.

“You are of your father the devil…”

Strong words. But why?

Because satan’s pattern is clear.

Lies.
Murder.
Distortion.
Manipulation
Control
Contradiction of God’s word.

Genesis 3: “Did God really say?”

That’s always how deception starts.

Not with obvious evil; with twisted truth.

Something close enough to sound believable.

Comfortable enough for your pride to take over.

Appealing enough for flesh.

You see they go so far as to likely attack Jesus and his mother.

They said, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.”

It’s an attempt to belittle His virgin birth statement.

Again, just another form of “did God really say?”

I love this section of scripture because they can’t even keep their stories straight.

They change from “Abraham is our father” to “ God is our father.”

Remember, just a few chapters ago they attempt to kill Jesus for claiming to be Gods son, and here they are doing the exact same!

This is desperation to find a legitimate defense for their clear lack of abiding in God.

And Jesus says:

That’s whose pattern you’re reflecting.

That’s whose voice you’re following.

And here’s the warning for the Church—

Religious proximity does not equal spiritual intimacy.

You can know church language.

Know Bible stories.

Know theology.

And still be building an identity apart from surrender.

Because when truth gets twisted…
identity gets unstable.

If you listen to culture long enough, you’ll hear the same message on repeat:

*Discover yourself.*
*Define yourself.*
*Speak your truth.*
*Live your truth.*

But here’s the problem.

If truth is something we create…
then identity becomes something unstable.

Because if truth shifts, identity shifts.
If feelings shift, identity shifts.
If culture shifts, identity shifts.
If circumstances shift, identity shifts.

And suddenly what we call identity is just whatever feels true in the moment.

But Jesus walks into John 8 and says something radically different.

Not that truth is something you invent.

But that truth is something you encounter.

Or more accurately…

Someone you encounter.

Because “truth” in John’s gospel is not merely information.

Truth is a Person.

And when truth gets twisted…

identity gets unstable.

That’s exactly what’s happening in this text.

This is not just an argument between Jesus and religious leaders.

This is a collision between false identity and true identity.

Between distorted truth and eternal truth.

Between religion and revelation.

Between selfishness, and selflessness.
