The disciples started with the wrong understanding, but they had the right heart posture.
This Sunday we dove straight into John chapter 9, where Jesus heals a man born blind. The chapter begins by setting the stage with Jesus’s disciples asking a curious question as they pass by a man.
“As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” John 9:1-3 ESV
They didn't know the answer, so they brought their question to Jesus. And that's the posture of a son — not knowing everything, and being humble enough to recognize it.
Jesus continues:
“We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.” - John 9:4-7 ESV
This man’s long-awaited miracle started with a question — but what if the disciples didn’t ask? What if they kept their curiosity to themselves and ignored the situation? Would Jesus have healed him? Or, if He still healed Him because the Father sent him, would the disciples have truly noticed and therefore have written about it?
Don’t stop being curious with God. Don’t give up on asking him questions. He is a generous Heavenly Father that loves to hear our questions — even if our understanding is wrong.
