September is Fall Prevention Month. Check out this simple checklist from the CDC and help your neighbors, friends and family members make their homes safe!

A Personal Note: Having our seniors understand and change their ways can be difficult. I personally know this. My aunts and uncles live together in the home I like to call the "family" home. It's where my grandma lived and where all of my cousins and I grew up. So many family members have lived in that house at one point or another.

Anyhow, the ages residing there range from 76 - 94 yrs old. My aunt has small rugs everywhere. Everytime I visit, I school them on the risk of falls caused by these rugs and I remove them. Next visit, they are back. She literally waits till I leave to put the darn rugs back. I finally gave up and purchased rubber backed, more sturdy replacements since hers were basically a piece of fabric placed on tile floors. Even I tripped over those things more than once. How they hadn't was just pure luck. My educating them was not enough and I had to decide if I wanted to beat them or join them.

Seniors just don't understand that those things that were acceptable in the past may just be a fall risk for them today. Keeping their dignity and decision making abilities in tact, you sometimes need to find a way around the situation and be creative on how to help them without going against their wishes.
