Are you missing warmer weather? We are! Do you have sea shells languishing somewhere in your home? Well, do as the Victorians did and bring back summer memories by creating a "Shell Pincushion."

These pincushions and similar other useful fancy works, could have been used at home or sold at Fancy Fairs to raise money for various charities.

This pattern is from the Godey's Lady's Book Vol. LXV, July-Dec. 1862

We had a Christmassy “Little Women” afternoon baking gingerbread at Historic Jerusalem Mill Village! The recipe we used dates to the Civil War, when women made and sent gingerbread to soldiers in Christmas boxes.

The Committee on Decorations needs YOU! 🎄

From the 1830s through the 1850s, Boston and Philadelphia held annual anti-slavery fairs at Christmastime. These fairs were a major fundraiser for the abolitionist cause. In 1850, the Committee on Decorations for the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Fair issued a call to the community for evergreens gathered “in profusion” to help decorate the hall for the fair.

Help our own “Committee on Decorations” make festive crafts for our Victorian Christmas Fair tomorrow at The Arsenal with New Castle Historical Society! We’ll be there 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Spirit of Christmas with Visit Historic New Castle.

10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Victorian Christmas Fair
11 a.m. - Parlor Games
12 p.m. - Caroling
1 p.m. Victorian Dancing
2 p.m. - Caroling
3 p.m. - Parlor Games
