The members of the Ulster County EMS Council continue to mourn the loss of longtime First Responder, EMT, and Past Plattekill EMS Captain Melinda “Mindy” Brugger.

To so many throughout our community, Mindy was far more than a fellow first responder. She was a compassionate friend, a trusted colleague, a respected leader, and someone whose kindness, dedication, and strength left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mindy devoted countless hours of her life to helping others. Through her compassion, commitment, and service, she made a meaningful and lasting difference within her department, throughout the fire and EMS community, and in the lives of the countless people she served.

In the days following this tragedy, additional information has been released by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office regarding the circumstances surrounding Mindy’s death. As we continue to grieve this tremendous loss, we also cannot look away from the horrific circumstances that took Mindy from her family, friends, colleagues, and community.

The individual responsible previously served as a Career Fire Lieutenant, a Past Volunteer Fire Chief, and Fire Instructor. His actions were his and his alone. They do not reflect the values of any agency he was a part of, the fire and EMS services, or the dedicated first responders who continue to serve their communities with honor, compassion, integrity, and respect for human life.

No title, rank, position, years of service, accomplishment, reputation, or personal history can justify, excuse, or diminish an act of violence such as this.

Mindy deserved better.

As we move through the difficult days ahead, our thoughts remain with Mindy’s family, friends, former colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved her. We also recognize the profound grief and lasting impact this tragedy has had on her fellow first responders and the greater fire and EMS community.

May we remember Mindy for the life she lived, the people she helped, the friendships she built, and the service she gave so selflessly to others.

Rest in peace, Mindy. You deserved better. Your service, your kindness, and your memory will never be forgotten.
