Thank you to Brian Lassiter of NY Life, and Vice-President of Johnson City Area Home Builders Association coming and speaking about the Battle of the Build!

Every fall local high schools compete in creating a project based on parameters JCAHBA sends out. On November 14 they will attend a competition at the Appalachian Fairground to show off their creation and be judged for it.

It was wonderful to hear all about an initiative in our region to help promote the trades to students. Thanks for coming Brian!

We were honored to be joined by Lisa Luster, Executive Director of the JC Home Builders Association.

She discussed the benefits of finding a vetted member when it comes time to do any work on your house. We also learned about the benefits of pulling permits and the liability (or lack of) that comes with permits.

We were recently joined by Cornelia Laemmli Orth, conductor of Symphony of the Mountains.

She spoke on work that the organization was doing to spread the love of music throughout our region, including a joint concert with Dobyns Bennett band musicians on Sunday March 15.

If you’ve never been to a SOTM concert we would highly recommend it! Incredible music, talented local musicians, and they always put on a lovely show.

We were blessed to be joined by Jes Williams, executive director of Bellafina Chocolates.

She spoke about about the mission of Bellafina, using high quality, delectable chocolate to help support women and children in need.

We loved hearing the message, and the sweet treats she brought added a little bit of “punch” to help her emphasize Bellafina’s story!

We were joined last week by Gracie Delaney of the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking.

Gracie discussed trafficking in multiple forms that we weren’t aware of. It isn’t just like in the movies where people are kidnapped and taken. There is everything from labor trafficking where individuals are basically turned into indentured servants because they “owe a debt” and have to work it off, to trafficking by parents of their own children to support their addictive habits.

While concerning, it was reassuring to know there are state and private entities fighting against this problem, striving to eradicate this problem.

Last week we were joined by Coach Chris Poore of the Dobyns Bennett Men’s basketball team. Coach brought with him several members of the team, highlighting how in the past he might bring 2-3 seniors. He brought the large group he did because of the unselfish nature of this years team, having six players who averaged double-digits or close to it in scoring.

He discussed the season they had scheduled, facing several top programs from out of state to help prepare them for what they hope to be a deep playoff run.

Great young men, wise insight from the coach, and a team that’s having a great season! All the more reason to find a night to head over to the Buck Van Huss dome!
