Hi friends, when in Tahoe, we invite you to Take It Slow!

Fire can actually be the best tool for preparing for fire!

For over 30 years, Sugar Pine Point State Park has used prescribed burns to fight the risk of catastrophic megafires. While it sounds counterintuitive, charred bark and singed needles are actually signs of a forest on the brink of regrowth.

How controlled burns can help:

🔴Clear out overgrowth: Reduces the fuels that feed massive wildfires.
🔴Boost biodiversity: Helps the park's namesake sugar pines regenerate.
🔴Create healthier habitats: Opens up the canopy for local wildlife to thrive.

But with climate change narrowing burn windows and severe staffing shortages looming, how do land managers keep up with California's massive forest backlog?

Lake Tahoe ospreys are iconic summer raptors, known for diving directly into the water to hunt fish. Seeing them is a great sign as they are vital indicators of the lake's ecological health!

Often confused with Bald Eagles, which also live in the basin, ospreys are noticeably smaller, have a white belly and head, and feature a dark brown "bandit mask" stripe through their eyes.

You can find them around Emerald Bay State Park, D.L. Bliss State Park, and around the Truckee River.
