Hello magnificent pride peeps! Guess what month it is! But before we pull out our rainbows and glitter, let's take some time to remember the people that came before us. The folks so brave to love and be who they are unapologetically. They paved the way for us to hold the hands of the ones we love proudly.
Let's start with the first letter. L. Le****ns. From Sappho of Le**os to the Subaru owning dog mom down the road, le****ns have always been here. The documented history of le***anism is limited, leaving the big L often erased or ignored.
In the early 1920s, the working class le***an was born. Before this, le***an relationships were presented as innocent friendships. Working class women began dressing more masculine and the terms "butch" and "femme" were coined. Le***an bars began opening.
Fast forward to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s. When doctors and nurses were too afraid to be in the same room as the patients, le****ns stepped up. They donated blood, they sat with the men abandoned by their families, they cared and grieved. It was this act of kindness that changed the GLBT to LGBT (and now lgbtq+).
Let's go Le****ns! ****ns
