It's true! We were with Dr. Joseph Oakes from the Eastern Virginia Agricultural Research and Extension Center this afternoon to harvest a research plot in King William County. This plot evaluated the impacts on yield and grain quality of planting wheat later in the calendar year.

After a busy morning in the office, we headed out and planted our sorghum variety trial. You might remember that we held a webinar about sorghum production earlier this year. This research plot is another part of our effort to support this crop in Virginia.

Today we unleashed the plot combine on our wheat grazing study! This was a momentous occasion as it marked the conclusion of a project that started back in October.

Way back in October (remember...autumn leaves, pumpkins, and no triple digit temperatures) we planted wheat with a special purpose in mind. We wanted to see if you could let livestock graze the wheat for a while, then remove the livestock and allow the wheat to mature for grain harvest. This would allow the production of two "crops" per cycle - both beef and wheat.

This is a common practice in states like Oklahoma and Kansas. We wanted to see if it would work here in Virginia.

And guess what! It did!

The data is still being processed, but we successfully planted wheat, grazed it, and harvested it for grain! You can expect a full write-up later.

In the meantime, enjoy this clip of the plot combine in action.

How big of a watermelon can we grow in the Middle Peninsula? How about pumpkins? How big can we grow one of those? Well, that's what we intend to find out with the inaugural "Royal Roots" program.

As part of our efforts evaluating alternative crops, we planted a small plot of buckwheat in King and Queen. Buckwheat can be ground for flour for use in noodles and pancakes. The flowers are also great for pollinators like honeybees.

This morning found us at back at King William High School for one last practice with the crops judging team before their competition next week. We spent two hours with the group, practicing grain identification, grain grading, and w**d identification.

This year's group of Teen Counselors are hard at work (and play) preparing for 4-H Camp 2026!

They will participate in several hours of training to be ready for their leadership roles. On Saturday, we gathered together in Richmond County to continue our training.

Our Teens worked on team bonding and communication, discussed youth stages of development, inclusion, why 4-H Camp makes a difference, and so much more.

Camp is under one month away! We can't wait to see you then!

This year's well water testing program is nearly here!

This test analyzes your drinking water for things like E. coli, arsenic, lead, copper, and more!

The best part is, once we know if you have any issues with your water, we can give you a hand determining the best way to fix the problem. Pretty cool, huh?

The water test costs $70. That may sound like a lot, but it's quite a bit cheaper than using a private lab. To get this same info would cost over $300 at a private lab. It's a big savings, but the opportunity only comes around once per year...so act fast!

Samples will be collected the morning of 6/24. To register, contact: [email protected] or call 804-443-3551.
