We did it! Island Hearts Press, the nonprofit behind the publication of Big Hearts on a Little Island: The Maui community’s heroic response to the 2023 wildfires, recently donated 100% of their proceeds to support the rebuilding and regrowth of the Lahaina Public Library.

A check for $25,882.16 was presented by author Victoria Moore to library representative Kathleen Ageton at the Wailuku Public Library last Friday, September 26th.

From the beginning of the project, Moore was adamant that it would remain community-centered in all respects. “Every single person on the team donated their time and talent pro bono in creating this book because we wanted every cent to go right back to the community,” Moore said. “Being able to hand over that donation check, especially to Kathleen who helped spark it all, was a perfect culminating moment after two years of hard work.”

Ageton was surprised and delighted by the size of the check, and is so glad that the proceeds will benefit the Lahaina Public Library.  “Big Hearts on a Little Island was a labor of love, of recognition of the unique spirit of selflessness, helpfulness and generosity following the deadliest US fire in over a century,” Ageton said. “When rebuilt, Lahaina Public Library will have its own copy of Big Hearts on Little Island so that those who come after us can understand not just the event, but the people who gave and gave and gave in order to help one another.”

Big Hearts on a Little Island is available to check out at all of Maui’s public libraries, and a limited number of copies remain available through a few retail partners on Maui.

Dr Jane Goodall was an inspiration to millions around the world to live with hope and compassion, and her influence was felt in Maui following the 2023 wildfires.

At just six years old, Elizabeth Moore was inspired by Jane, one of her heroes, to start her own tiny nonprofit "Seeds of Joy" as a project of Dr Goodall's youth action program . The original plan was to plant 1,000 native trees on Maui, but after the Upcountry fires, Elizabeth pivoted to helping restore what was lost, working with her friends and other community volunteers to replanting in Kula.

Dr Goodall will be missed, but her vision and positive impact will continue to live on in the countless people she inspired and empowered to help make the world a better place.

At the beginning of September, Big Hearts on a Little Island had the tremendous honor of representing the State of Hawai'i as the "Great Reads from Great Places" adult title at the 2025 Library of Congress National Book Festival. Author Victoria Moore, along with the amazing staff, attended the festival in Washington to share the spirit of aloha at this national celebration of books and reading.

We are saddened at the news of the fire at . The Kula Lodge and restaurant really stepped up for the Maui community after the 2023 wildfires, offering shelter in the lodge to those displaced, and serving as the location of a relief hub for people affected by the upcountry fires (detailed in chapters 2 & 5 of Big Hearts on a Little Island)

Please support Kula Lodge in any way you can. Their shop Kula Marketplace is still open normal hours, and has copies of Big Hearts for sale.

Mahalo for all you have done for our community, we wish you a speedy recovery!

Cats, dogs, pigs, tortoises, parrots, horses... these are the animals of Big Hearts on a Little Island.

Some were saved and cared for after the fires by the Maui Humane Society & HARF, others were icons of Front Street (we all know Lahaina Bird Stand!) and some brought comfort to fire survivors at Spirit Horse Ranch.

You can read all these beautiful animal stories in Chapter 9 of Big Hearts on a Little Island.

Final copies available to order online, link in bio.
100% of the net proceeds will be donated to support the rebuilding and regrowth of the Lahaina Public Library ❤️

Regular operations for so many Maui businesses came to a halt on August 8 2023, yet local business owners opted to forget about their own woes and instead focus their attention on those in need.

From hotels and restaurants to shops and service providers, countless businesses found ways to pivot and be of service to their community.

You can read about the efforts of some of these businesses in chapter 10 of Big Hearts on a Little Island.
