New and innovative water solutions like Water from Air generators and Gray Water Recycling Systems need to be a part of this conversation for a sustainable future. Fighting over water rights is not the only path. These technologies are already in use around the world and there just needs to be the political will to start thinking outside the box. Beyond residential and commercial use of these devices... how about we start farming water?

Water-from-Air Technology Brings Clean Drinking Water to Maui Medic Healers Hui in Lahaina

Kihei, Hawaii - Eye of the Needle Holistic Living, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, is honored to provide a Water-from-Air generator to the Maui Medic Healers Hui new community venue in Lahaina. This new generator will provide three gallons of fresh drinking water per day and prevent excess plastic bottle waste by as much as 5,670 bottles per year!

When the fires devastated Lahaina, Mauna Medics Hui in Hilo, HI mobilized immediately under the guidance of Maui-based co-founder, Noelani Ahia. As a Kānaka Maoli descendant of Lahaina, she led the team in forming the Maui Medic Healers Hui as a sister organization. They provide multidisciplinary care, including Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) healing, Western, and Eastern medicine. They strive to create spaces for healing following the devastating fires in August 2023 and are committed to consistent, long-term support and building communities of care during this time of great need for the Island of Maui.

Atmospheric Water Generators (AWG) create clean water from the air we breathe. The AWG draws in ambient air and collects the moisture through condensation. Using a six-stage water filtration system, ultraviolet light purification and ozone treatment removes impurities. The generators are powered by standard or alternative power sources, are portable, and do not require any outside water source. All water-from-air generators provided by Eye of the Needle Holistic Living are purchased through WAIEA Water Solutions on O'ahu.

Eye of the Needle Holistic Living was founded after the fires in 2023 by Bren Taylor and David Kitts, L. Ac., Dipl. O.M. who shared, “We're all in a tight spot and we're all in this together. Contributing to the larger community is how we get each other through the Eye of the Needle. We support each other. The world has changed and our new non-profit, Eye of the Needle Holistic Living, was born of these times.” The non-profit is committed to supporting education, sustainability, and cultural programs on Maui. What This Means to Our School

As the Campus Director, I have seen firsthand the importance of sustainable solutions in addressing the unique challenges faced by our Maui community.

Our campus, serving almost 250 students and staff, is committed to fostering an environment that prioritizes sustainability and innovative practices. The implementation of Water-from-Air technology would provide a vital source of clean drinking water, directly benefiting our entire school community. This initiative aligns perfectly with our educational goals and our broader commitment to environmental stewardship.

Water scarcity is a pressing issue for many island communities, and Maui is no exception. By harnessing atmospheric moisture to generate potable water, this technology offers a reliable and eco-friendly solution that can significantly reduce our dependence on traditional water sources. This is particularly crucial for our school, where ensuring access to clean drinking water is fundamental to the health and well-being of our students and staff.

Furthermore, integrating Water-from-Air technology into our campus will serve as an invaluable educational tool. It presents a unique opportunity for our students to engage with cutting-edge technology and understand its impact on sustainability. This hands-on learning experience will not only enhance their academic journey but also inspire them to become future leaders in environmental conservation.

The benefits of this initiative extend beyond immediate water access. It represents a critical step towards achieving long-term sustainability for Maui.
