Preventing sexual violence on campus takes all of us. This image shows how individuals, relationships, organizations, and society each contribute to a culture of respect, support, and accountability.

Learning bystander skills, supporting survivors, funding prevention programs, and strengthening protective policies all play a role. Sexual violence is never the survivor’s fault.

September 26: Caturdays at Sloppy Joe’s from 12:00 to 8:00 PM. Stop by and grab a pair of light-up cat ears to support Womankind and Christina’s Courage.

October 3: Domestic Violence Awareness Month Kickoff with the Domestic Abuse Shelter and Key West Police Department at Bayview Park from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

October 15: Community outreach at the SOS Foundation Food Pantry on Stock Island from 12:00 to 2:00 PM.

November 5: Mary Ellen’s Charity Night benefiting Christina’s Courage from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Tickets go on sale October 15.

Christina’s Courage FCASV was honored to join nonprofit leaders and community partners from across Monroe County for Florida Keys Nonprofit Day 2026 in Marathon Faro Blanco Resort Marathon Florida Keys, Curio by Hilton

The day challenged us to look beyond the number of services provided and focus on what matters most: the meaningful, lasting changes experienced by the people we serve.

Through Robyn Faucy Results 1st training, we explored new ways to listen to survivors, strengthen our services, and better understand the human impact of our work. We also heard from Leah McDermott of the Florida Nonprofit Alliance about the strengths, challenges, and opportunities facing Florida’s nonprofit sector.

We are bringing these lessons back to Christina’s Courage FCASV as we continue providing free, survivor-centered services throughout the Florida Keys.

Yesterday was Women’s Equality Day! It is a reminder of how far women have come, but also of how much work remains.

At Christina’s Courage, we see one part of that work every day.

Equality also means having autonomy over your own body. It means being able to live without sexual violence, abuse, coercion or fear. It means survivors having choices, being heard and believed, and having access to support without judgment.

These conversations matter, and they need to continue in our own community.

This Saturday, August 29, the Key West Chapter of NOW is hosting a Women’s Equality Day gathering, The Cost of Being a Woman, from 12:30–2:30 p.m. at 801 Georgia Street in Key West. The gathering will include conversations around financial stability, menopause care, safety and signs of abusive relationships, the Equal Rights Amendment and more.

We’re grateful for the people and organizations in our community who continue to create space for women to learn, connect, speak openly and advocate for change.

Women’s equality includes women’s safety.
It includes bodily autonomy.
It includes believing survivors.
And it includes making sure support is there when someone needs it.

When most people hear the word “rural,” the Florida Keys probably aren’t the first place that comes to mind.

We have busy tourist seasons, resorts, restaurants and communities that can feel anything but rural. But rural isn’t just about how a place looks. It can also be about geography, isolation and how easily people can access the services they need.

HRSA, the Health Resources and Services Administration, is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that focuses heavily on improving access to care in rural and underserved communities.

For Monroe County, our unique geography creates challenges that aren’t always obvious. We are a long chain of islands connected primarily by one highway. Specialized healthcare, mental health care and victim services may be miles away. Transportation can be limited. And in small, close-knit communities, simply seeking help can raise concerns about privacy and confidentiality.

For survivors of sexual violence, those barriers matter.

A survivor may know the person providing a service. They may worry about being recognized walking into an office. They may need to travel a significant distance for specialized care or have very few providers to choose from.

Understanding rural communities helps us understand why services have to be designed differently for the people who live in them.

At Christina’s Courage, we see both the challenges and the strengths of serving an island community. Strong relationships, collaboration and creative solutions can help close the gaps created by distance and limited resources.

Being rural doesn’t mean being without resources. It means recognizing where the barriers exist and continuing to build better ways around them.

As the 2026 Summit - Power of Advocacy comes to a close, we leave feeling inspired, energized, and deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside advocates, counselors, prevention educators, SANE nurses, and community leaders from across Florida.

Over the past several days, we explored innovative approaches to survivor services, prevention education, advocacy, leadership, and building stronger communities. We were reminded that every conversation, every act of support, and every voice raised in advocacy has the power to create change.

At Christina’s Courage, we are proud to bring these ideas, connections, and renewed passion back to the Florida Keys as we continue our mission of supporting survivors, expanding access to services, and strengthening our community through education and prevention.

Thank you for hosting another incredible summit and to everyone who shared their knowledge, experiences, and dedication to this important work.

Together, we are stronger. Together, we are creating a future where survivors are believed, supported, and empowered.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors During Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), and I wanted to take a moment to highlight an organization right here in our community that truly saves lives.
Christina’s Courage is the only sexual assault advocacy center serving Monroe County, providing crisis support, advocacy, and compassionate care to survivors when they need it most. Their work is vital—and it’s powered by community support.

This month, they’re raising funds to purchase a forensic exam camera, a critical tool that helps collect evidence with dignity and accuracy, supporting both healing and justice for survivors.
