Our guest speakers on Thursday are Steve Burns and Stacy Hron of the WI DNR. Steve Burns is the Wildlife Biologist for Kewaunee, Door and Brown counties and the property manager for C.D. Besadny Fish & Wildlife Area. Stacy Hron is the Lake Michigan Program Coordinator, working on projects to protect and restore Lake Michigan.
Their presentation will be on the Kewaunee Marsh Clean up project:
The Kewaunee Marsh is one of the largest intact coastal marshes in this area of the state, and large areas of the marsh are owned by WDNR as part of the C.D. "Buzz" Besadny Fish and Wildlife Area. It provides waterfowl, colonial waterbird and migratory bird stopover habitat. This site is about one mile upstream of Lake Michigan. Approximately 15 acres of the marsh was contaminated by a historical railcar derailment and resultant spill of arsenic-based pesticides or herbicides to the marsh in the mid-1940s. Currently, several DNR programs including Remediation and Redevelopment, Wildlife Management and Office of Great Waters are working together to design and implement arsenic remediation and habitat restoration in the Kewaunee Marsh. Remediation and restoration at this ecologically important coastal wetland on the Kewaunee River would target native fish, resident and migratory birds, and other wetland-dependent taxa. To date, the presence of contamination has discouraged restoration and management of this site. With remediation and restoration, this area will be returned to an attractive and safer habitat for all the fish, wildlife and community that use the marsh.
We meet at noon at the Grove in Kewaunee. Guests are welcome. Please message us if you'd like to attend.
