Spring is in full swing! For this month’s community challenge, we want to know who planted the most drought-tolerant native plants this month!

Native plants (plants that are specifically adapted and have evolved with the ecosystem/region they originate from) typically require less water than introduced species.

So, if you’re planting a new garden, or tending to an old one, let us know if you planted any drought-tolerant native plants and how many you planted.

Drought is categorized as a period of time with abnormally dry weather. This phenomena of little precipitation can cause agricultural and hydrological issues like crop damage and decreased water supplies.

You can help lessen the brutality of drought by implementing landscape changes - like switching to native plants that may not require as much supplemental watering and conserving water when possible.

The Guadalupe River is spring-fed but is still highly dependent on rainfall. The Guadalupe River begins in Kerr County where the North and South Fork converge and the river passes through several counties before it reaches the Gulf. The Guadalupe has supported people for thousands of years, and continues to do so. It is over 400 river miles long, and supports a myriad of diverse flora and fauna.

What even is water?

Put simply, water is a molecule made up of two elements- hydrogen and oxygen. Three atoms, two hydrogens and one oxygen, all come together to create this critical and precious liquid that we love and need.

About 71% of Earth is covered in water, but we can only use a small fraction of that in our daily lives. Plus, all of the water on Earth is all the water we have! So, no matter what you're using it for, water is invaluable and it's a resource we should do our best to conserve!

Why care about water?

This might seem like a trivial question to some, but did you know that the average adult is made up of approximately 60% water?

In addition, everything from your food (carnivore, herbivore or anything in between!) to your phone, to your favorite hobbies - all of life depends on water!

So next time you're eating a sandwich, buying a new smartphone, or going swimming- think of the water used to grow the lettuce, construct the smartphone, or fill the pool you're about to use. Water is a shared resource-one we all need and use. So splash wisely!
