Nurses took a pledge to devote themselves to the welfare of caring for the sick. They deserve an acknowledgment for the unwavering care they provided to patients throughout their career.

There is no better way to show respect to nurses than to pay tribute to their dedication and life as a nurse. When nurses graduated from nursing school, one of their rites of passage was to pledge an oath to maintain and honor the noble traditions of their profession and to practice their profession faithfully. This recital is called the Nightingale Pledge.

The Texas Hill Country Nurses Honor Guard exists to honor all nurses. We offer Living Tributes to nurses near the end-of-life in their home, at their bedside or place of choice. It is our privilege to perform the Nightingale Tribute at their funeral or memorial service. During the short ceremony, it is our honor to stand beside our colleagues and acknowledge their service as nurses in the presence of family and friends. We release them from their nursing duties and time well-served.

During the ceremony, we recite a poem as well as present a white rose and an extinguished Nightingale lamp to the family, symbols of the nursing profession, while offering words of condolence. Texas Hill Country Nurses Honor Guard members are dedicated, active and retired nurses, as well as nursing students, who volunteer their time and expenses to help provide an honorable and dignified tribute to our nursing colleagues.
