The Yellow-bellied Marmot (Marmota flaviventris) also known as a rock chuck is a large ground squirrel in the marmot genus. It is one of fourteen species of marmots and is native to the mountainous regions of the western United States and Canada. These herbivores are mainly diurnal and spend most of their time on the ground in burrows. They are a common sight in Fossil Butte National Monument along the Nature Trail and steep cliffs around Fossil Butte and Cundick Ridge.

Historical Residents of Fossil: Anne Byers Richey "Queen Anne".

Fossil, Wyoming has it's very own unsolved mystery. In 1919, Anne was convicted of cattle rustling. She was the only woman ever convicted of this offense in Wyoming. While waiting for her appeal, she was poisoned at her ranch. The murderer was never found and it was speculated that the murderer was the true cattle rustler. Anne received her nick-name "Queen Ann" for the regal way she rode her horse.

“The immediate plan is to get grants to restore the roof, siding and foundation, so that we can prevent any further damage,” Aase said. “We hope we can get at least the roof done before winter, so that’s why we need and want locals to be involved.”
