Final Thoughts for the 2026 trip

This years trip has been absolutely wonderful. So many new changes and all the new faces I have met in Rwebsingo to work with were great. I look forward to what next year brings.
Sherry Renfro,

Today I was grateful that gentleness was our Fruit of the Spirit for today. We continued to be challenged by patients wanting our help and attention, and it breaks my heart. Our schedule for this year was full and our list for next time has 38 patients in Karugutu and 20 in Rwebisingo. We had patients begging for help with both medical and surgical needs, and we just don't have any more resources this year. It was hard to be gentle when I was also frustrated at the situation, but in-the-moment prayer helped keep me patient and show God's love to these last few people. His Will is always done and we trust him.

A great mission this year. We renewed friendships and met several new people who hopefully will continue with MercyTrips. Western Uganda as always is great.
Jim Huston

This is my third trip to Karugutu. We continue to see and care for more patients. We were able to serve 72 people this year! We have our usual OR crew; it was like coming home to family. Though, we did miss Dr. Therese who was unable to make it this year (she’s been my partner in ministry for the last two years). We have about 40 on the waitlist for next year. Please continue to pray for MercyTrips and its outreach.

This year we have had challenges and praises! God is amazing! We had several new workers this year who told us about how they wanted to work with Mercy trip for several years and felt it was an answer to prayer to be with us this year.
Several have talked with me about scholarships for school. Tonight team members stepped up to help with these request. God tells us He will give us the desires of our heart and tonight mine is overflowing.
Pastor Moses prayed tonight that God would keep us healthy and young so we each could keep returning. I pray that God answers that prayer.
FYI: Our Village Clinic Team saw and treated 1,444 people in five clinics and rain three afternoons!
Christine

From the trip funding and budgeting, to the travel issues we had, to the logistics of working a two different surgical sites as well as the clinic sites, we were dependent on God for every aspect this year, and we were taken care of at every step. God is good. We did a record number of surgeries for these sites. Patients kept coming all week and our list for next year is almost full already. The Ugandan team continues to grow, and as Christine mentioned we are in need of new scholarship sponsors for this growing army of healthcare providers. Please join us in prayer that God will increase our donor and volunteer pools to the point that we can begin doing 2 trips a year again or even more. We have been humbly used to do some awesome work, yet not us, but Christ in us. God bless all of you for your prayers, your time, your donations and your love for the Ugandan people.
Craig

Mercy Trips 2026 is complete! Our final thoughts will be a subsequent post, but here are the numbers we reached.
Outreach Clinics - ~1444
Rwebisingo surgery - 34 (last year was only 25!)
Karugutu surgery - 72 (last year was only 67!)
Surgery broke records on this side for the 4th year in a row and broke 100 for the first time with 105 total procedures! Praise God!

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of things we do not see."
Hebrews 11:1
"...faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."
James 2:17

Team members, where did you see faithfulness today?

Christine: Some of our Ugandan team members have been working with us since 2009 and they still come to work hard and hardly ever complain. They have been faithful to just come back and come back and come back.

Craig: Similar to Christine, except I am thinking specifically about the team members we've educated - the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, surgeons, etc. They are supposed to volunteer one time for every year we sponsor, and they continue to come back even after their obligations are complete.

Jim: Pastor Moses demonstrates faithfulness. He runs a church and an orphanage with a school; he has services/activities Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday (for the kids), and all day Sunday; and he is here for us. He will drop what he is doing if Mercy Trips team members need to get something or do something. He is a breath of fresh air.

Melissa: The Karugutu surgical team had 1 no-show and 2 cancellations today, but we wanted to be faithful to our mission and our sponsors. So we screened patients that were waiting to be put on the list for next year and were able to add-on 4 additional procedures!

Thu Ha: Our first surgical patient was very anxious and didn't want to have his procedure, but his wife and children made him come to us. He told us that he had faith in Jesus and us to make sure he was okay.

Sherry: Godfrey has been faithful by doing everything to both assist with surgeries and try to teach the newer staff at Rwebisingo.

The team continues our devotions on the Fruit of the Spirit, so we were asked, "Where did you see kindness or goodness today?"

Thu Ha: Seeing all the smiles on the faces of the children as we greeted them and gave them toys.

Sherry: Playing ball with the kids before their surgical procedures.

Craig: The kindness of our donors that allowed us to pay for a woman with advanced breast cancer to get transport to the cancer center.

Jim: The patience and politeness of the kids waiting for candy, and taking turns playing kickball.

Christine: We were playing jump rope and one of the big girls helped pull one of the very small, adorable little girls forward to get a turn when many of the other big girls were pushing the little ones away.

Melissa: At the health centers in Uganda, there are no nurses to take care of patients. The family has to take care of them, including bringing food, bed pans, even toilet paper. It's amazing to see community members take care of each other, sitting with the children of their neighbors so Mom can get food, holding babies for each other, even advocating for the patient in the next bed when their caregiver has to step away. So much kindness.

Today our outreach clinic saw 324 patients and would have seen over 360 if it didn't rain. God had a different plan and we honor His will.

Karugutu performed 10 procedures on children, plus 2 skin tag removals, and gave out MANY toys. Many additional patients were also prayed with and preached to.

Rwebisingo had 8 procedures.

Today is the team's rest day, and we are grateful to Drs. Patrick and Charles and the local health center staff for discharging our surgical patients at Karugutu and Rwebisingo. We ended the week with:
1. 891 patients seen at 3 village clinics.
2. 32 surgical procedures at Karugutu.
3. 18 surgical procedures at Rwebisingo.

We met up for a late lunch and Dr. Craig and Sherry took boda bodas back to the motel!

Continuing our Fruit of the Spirit theme, we asked the team, "Where did you see peace today?"

Melissa - A 6-year-old boy came in today crying in pain, suffering from an abscess. Our surgeons quickly squeezed him into the schedule to drain and repair it. Later, I tried to bring him a toy and he was fast asleep, curled up with his mother, also asleep and at peace now that her boy is well.

Craig - We come here from a different country, not even speaking the languages, and people put their lives in our hands to get surgery or medicine. That shows a kind of peace and trust in us that we should have for our Savior.

Sherry - Driving back home from Rwebisingo, I left the window down to watch the hills go by.

Jim - I had a 15 min nap!

Thu Ha - During the wait for the car. The job was done for the day and everyone was decompressing in their own way. The locals seemed pretty chill and at peace while sitting there with us, too.

Christine - Such a beautiful valley! We had another long day today, but the scenery this morning helped us start the day full of peace!

This trip we are studying the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) during our team devotions each morning. Today was "joy" so we asked the team, "Where did you see joy today?"

Christine (who also provided the photos) - At the end of our day, after giving the soccer ball and jump ropes to the school administrator, the kids sang us an appreciation song. I said goodbye and started walking towards the team. I could hear the children running towards me. As I turned toward them, I was surrounded by children trying to touch me. We had a big group hug which brought much laughter. This filled my heart with joy!

Melissa - Three babies were born at Karugutu! While they were crying out in surprise, all of us that heard their cries were filled with joy at the new lives entering the world.

Sherry - We had wonderful help from Godfrey today, especially when he taught our new scrub techs, Joshua and Mabel, how we work.

Jim - Joyful to see so many people waiting for care, and even the ones who we couldn't see were gracious and appreciative.

Thu Ha - Joy that all the pre-ops showed up, all the post-ops were happy, and that I had Nurse Agatha, who is a real go-getter and helped get things done. I also like when I talk in the local languages and it makes the Ugandans happy.

Craig - When I was going to lunch, there were several patients waiting to be screened for surgery. They had to keep waiting. I asked them if I could take a photo and asked them to smile like they were about to see the doctor. That was a lot of joy!

The whole team ended the day with the joy of peppermint brownies!
