Hui o Laka runs the Kōke‘e Natural History Museum, the volunteer conservation program "Kōkua Kōke‘e", and the Kōke‘e CCC Camp [Civilian Conservation Corps Camp] at Kōke‘e State Park on the West Side of Kauaʻi.

Peddle to the Meadow Up Hill Bike Race this Sunday, May 24. Kokee Road (the Kekaha leg) will be closed starting at 7:30am. Suggest limiting your Koke'e day to the afternoon. There are no safe places to pass bicyclists. Expect there to be bikes on the road all week leading up to the event. The end of the race is just past mile marker 25 on Kokee Road.

Some things to look forward to!

Educators from the Museum’s J. Watumull Planetarium note that people on Oʻahu will experience a Lahaina Noon on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and all major Hawaiian Islands will see a Blue Moon on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

We have been notified water levels are extremely low in the park's water tank. Please bring drinking water. Although they have located the leak and working on it, it will take days to fill up the main tank. Tour drivers, encourage use of the Waimea Canyon or Kalalau Lookout restrooms. All others are on this system.

The public is advised to check conditions before venturing out for hiking, river, or beach excursions. River and stream crossings, recreational trails, and other outdoor recreation areas may quickly become hazardous.
During severe weather, emergency rescues may not be possible. Do not cross swollen rivers or streams; always check with a lifeguard at any lifeguard station before entering the ocean. Know before you go.
The Hawai'i Department of Health Clean Water Branch has issued a Brown Water Advisory for the island of Kaua'i. The Department of Health advises beach users to stay our of waters when the water appears brown or murky, especially following storms or heavy rain.

May be clearing up for views. Will be dangerous to hike for a while. Trails are super saturated and water will be draining off the mountains with higher than normal stream volume.

A lot of rain and major gusts of wind overnight. Power out due to tree falls for some of Kokee. No canyon views this morning. Trails are not safe and closed. Drive carefully on the roads if you do drive up the mountain.

Everything is fogged in. Waiting for the next round of rain.
