Day 1 of the City Nature Challenge is complete, and we've already documented over 400 species in the Monadnock Region! The City Nature Challenge continues through Monday, and any iNaturalist observations made in the Monadnock Region during this time are automatically added to the project.

Today, mini-bioblitzes will be happening at 11AM The Caterpillar Lab's new headquarters (13 Main St., Dublin) and 3PM at the Harris Center.

🌱 The City Nature Challenge is the world's largest BioBlitz, and it's coming to the Monadnock Region for the very first time this spring! Any observations of wild plants, animals, or fungi made via iNaturalist in the Monadnock Region from April 24 to 27 will automatically be included, and there are tons of fun opportunities to explore the incredible biodiversity of our region alongside other nature lovers, including a walk at the Harris Center on April 25. The hope is that, by documenting what lives here, we can better understand — and care for — the nature that surrounds us.

We have two programs tomorrow!

Join us at the Gilsum STEAM Academy to view some of our overwintering and other local caterpillars at the SEED celebration & Community Sustainability Fair.

Or if you want to get outside and learn about insect ecology and phenology, come and walk with us at the Swanzey Airport to see what insect sign we can find! You might not think "bugs" when you think of late winter activity, but there is still plenty to see if you're looking for it!

Check out our events calendar on our website for more information!

We're looking forward to our winter insect search with The Caterpillar Lab on Saturday morning! We will be walking on packed snow, but if you plan on coming, spikes or other traction devices might be a good idea! We'll learn about many different insect signs that are observable in winter. For example, did you know this little structure on sugar maple is a forest tent caterpillar egg mass?
