Visit our table at Kearney Public Library's Summer Kickoff on Monday, June 1, from 4-6 pm! We'll have fun bookish activities and FREE children's books. Thanks to a Keno grant, we will have a selection of Spanish and bilingual children's books in addition to English language books at this event! 📚☀️🎉

It's Teacher Appreciation Week, and we want to recognize the amazing volunteer tutors in our English language tutoring program! Tutors spend an hour each week helping adult students improve their English proficiency. Thank you for supporting literacy and learners in Kearney! 📚📒✏️👏

It's graduation season! Here are some suggested books that make great gifts for graduates.

"This is Water" by David Foster Wallace: A renowned commencement speech about awareness and compassion.

"Be You!" by Peter H. Reynolds: Encourages authenticity and staying true to oneself, often used as a long-term teacher-signed gift.

“I Knew You Could” by Craig Dorfman:  The Little Engine That Could brings inspirational words to graduates.

We've got a busy April, which also happens to be Global Volunteer Month! Kearney Literacy Council will be presenting about our English language tutoring program and volunteer opportunities at Kearney Action Network's upcoming meeting on April 28, 5 pm, at Kearney Public Library. Come learn how you can support literacy and many other volunteer efforts in our community! 📚✏️

It's National Library Week! Kearney Literacy Council would like to acknowledge the wonderful people and resources that make Kearney Public Library such a special place in our community and our lives. It's where we hold our board meetings, many of our events, and where tutors and students come together to teach, learn, and improve literacy. We are so very grateful for KPL! 📚✏️

It's National Library Week!

Millions of people visit their libraries every week—and for good reason. During National Library Week, April 19–25, take time to discover what brings you joy at your library. Visit your library and bring friends and family along; encourage a friend to get a library card and discover the opportunities it unlocks; browse the shelves, join a book club, attend a program or storytime, or get started on your next creative project in a makerspace.

National Library Week is filled with opportunities to celebrate our libraries and take action to keep them strong. Join in on one (or all!) of the various commemoration days:

Monday, 4/20: Right to Read Day - we're calling on library lovers and advocates to celebrate wins against censorship efforts and to take action to defend the freedom to read. On Right to Read Day, ALA will release the State of America's Libraries Report, including the list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2025.

Tuesday, 4/21: National Library Workers Day - take time to honor and thank the library workers at your library for all they do to impact your community.

Wednesday, 4/22: National Library Outreach Day - a day to celebrate libraries meeting people where they are. Look for your library out in your community - in the bookmobile, at a local pop-up, at schools or assisted living facilities, or wherever!

Thursday, 4/23: Take Action For Libraries Day - this year, we're asking YOU to show up for our libraries and take action against legislative censorship attempts by contacting Congress.

We are honored to be the donation location for this Children’s Book Drive. 📚 Now through May 2nd, you can drop off any new or gently used children’s books (in English AND Spanish) here at the Open Book, to then be distributed through the Help Care Clinic.
