DYK: Missouri is named after the Missouria Indians, who first came to the attention of early European explorers during the 1673 Marquette and Joliet expedition down the Mississippi River. The expedition encountered the Peoria (Illinois) Indians, who referred to their western neighbors as the oumessourit - “the people of the dugout canoes” (the name later morphed into Missouria). The Missouria called themselves Niutachi, or “people of the river’s mouth.” They are related to the Otoe, Winnebago and Ioway tribes, and had migrated from the Great Lakes region to what is now Missouri perhaps as early as AD 1250. Between AD 1350 and 1793, about 5,000 or more Missouria lived in a large village in what is now Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park.

The park is home to Missouri’s American Indian Cultural Center, which houses permanent and temporary displays interpreting the cultural history of the nine tribes that called Missouri home in the early 19th century. It's not too late in the year to find and document the locations of bush honeysuckle, wintercreeper, and other invasives that are still visible! The Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System (EDDSMapS) is an easy way to collect and store data in a national database that anyone can access.

Anyone who can ID invasive plants can enter the location, abundance, and treatment information in a report online or in the app. Get the EDDSMapS link and an instructional webinar recording on the MoIP website: https://moinvasives.org/moip-resources/reporting-tools/
