TONIGHT!!!

Join us for a fun evening of Popsicles & Playtime at the TWE playground!

Bring your friends and the whole family for some time to play, cool off with a popsicle, and connect with other Scout families before the new program year gets underway.

When: August 4th from 6:30pm-7:30pm
Where: Tom Wilson Elementary playground (5200 Falcon Landing Blvd)

This is a casual gathering with no formal agenda, so feel free to come and go as your schedule allows.

We hope to see everyone there for a sweet treat and some outdoor fun!

Can you find the gecko?

A mossy leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus sikorae) hides in plain sight in Mantadia National Park, Madagascar. These geckos have uncanny camouflaging abilities, which are needed in a rainforest filled with keen-eyed predators. When resting, they face downward to catch unsuspecting insects climbing from the ground and to prevent their eyes from reflecting light that can alert birds to their presence.

Another important reminder as we're out enjoying the outdoors this summer (assuming you haven't melted just getting to the trail! 🫠)

When a trail's backed up, it's tempting to step around the crowd. That's how braiding starts — multiple parallel paths eating into vegetation that won't grow back this season, or maybe ever. Waiting ten seconds costs you nothing. Widening the trail costs everyone.

At Brazos Bend State Park, many animals call the park home.
Every insect, bird, mammal, and reptile has a job to do that keeps the biodiversity healthy and balanced.

This is a gorgeous water moccasin, or cottonmouth, giving a warning that it doesn’t want to be messed with.
Contrary to belief, these animals are not aggressive. However, like many animals, they will defend themselves when cornered, so be sure to give wild animals their space!

Keep an eye on the Turk’s Cap flowers by the Nature Center building and you might spot a Ruby-throated Hummingbird! We’ve been seeing a female hummingbird visiting red flowers in the courtyard this week. She has probably finished nesting for the summer and is rebuilding her strength before fall migration (which actually starts in August). She gets energy from flower nectar, but she also gets protein from eating tiny insects and spiders, so remember to avoid using pesticides if you want to give hummingbirds the nutrition they need.
