🏀 NBA 2026–27: WHAT REFS WILL WATCH

The NBA released its 2026-27 points of emphasis for referees. The four focus areas:

1. Off-arm push-offs by offensive players
2. Freedom of movement on screens
3. Freedom of movement on the perimeter and in the post
4. Straight-line pathway plays

LEBA coaching note (our advice, not NBA policy): These are habits young players can fix now. Create space with footwork, not your off arm. Set legal, still screens. Defend with your feet.

🏀 JAMES HARDEN JOINS THE 28,000-POINT CLUB!

Another major milestone for one of basketball's most prolific scorers.

Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden has reached 28,000 career NBA points, becoming the 13th player in league history to reach that mark.

From his signature step-back three-pointer to his ability to create opportunities for teammates, Harden has built a career defined by scoring, skill, and offensive creativity.

🔥 LEBA View: Great scorers aren't made overnight. They develop through repetition, discipline, footwork, and countless hours of practice.

Every young athlete can learn from that commitment to mastering the fundamentals.

🏀 Keep working. Keep improving. Keep building your game.

The NBA went global to start the preseason.

In Macao, China, Houston beat Dallas 135-117 in the first of two NBA China Games.

Cooper Flagg scored 19 points, 17 of them in the second quarter, and sat the whole second half.

The two teams play again in Macao this weekend. It was also Dusty May's first NBA game as Dallas coach.

LEBA view: Basketball is a global game. Players who can play anywhere have more options.

Olivia Miles didn't just win Rookie of the Year. She won it unanimously, with all 74 votes.

The Minnesota Lynx guard scored 790 points, a WNBA rookie record. That passed Caitlin Clark's 769 from 2024.
She also set a rookie record with 22 games of 20+ points.

She averaged 19.8 points and 6.0 assists and finished second in MVP voting.

LEBA view: Rookies who are ready on Day 1 got ready long before Day 1.

Defense won Angel Reese a major award.

The Atlanta Dream forward is the 2026 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. It's her first time winning it, and she's the first Dream player ever to earn the honor.

She received 46 of 74 votes from a national media panel.

Now she and the Dream are in the WNBA Finals.

LEBA view: Defense is a skill you can train every day. It shows up on the stat sheet and on the award list.

Two seasons. Two firsts.

2025: The Golden State Valkyries became the first WNBA team to make the playoffs in its inaugural season.
2026: They became the only expansion team in league history to reach the Finals in Year 2.

They finished a semifinal sweep of Las Vegas with an 87-77 overtime win on Oct. 9. Gabby Williams is averaging 22.7 points this postseason.

LEBA view: New programs can build fast when roles are clear and everyone defends.

A'ja Wilson is the 2026 WNBA MVP, her record fifth.

Her MVP years: 2020, 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
She is the first player in the league's 30-year history to win it three seasons in a row.

She received 65 of 74 first-place votes after averaging 26.2 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks.

LEBA view: Five MVPs come from doing the work every season, not one big year.
