Before fences, before highways, before New Mexico was even a state… there were horses. 🐎

In the 1500s, Spanish explorers brought the first horses to the Southwest—forever changing the land, the people, and the future of agriculture. Those horses didn’t just stay—they spread, adapted, and became part of the identity of the West.

They shaped trade, transportation, and the way ranching exists today. They became partners to cowboys, tools for survival, and symbols of freedom across New Mexico’s landscapes.

That legacy still lives on—in our arenas, on our ranches, and in the values we carry forward.

At the Foundation for Western Professionals, we believe understanding where we come from is what prepares us to lead where we’re going.

👉 Be part of preserving that legacy.

Wild horses in New Mexico can impact agriculture and rangeland health!

While wild horses are a symbol of the West, unmanaged populations can create real challenges for the land, livestock, and rural communities.

Here’s why ⬇️

🌾 Competition for forage
Wild horses graze on the same grasses that cattle, sheep, and wildlife depend on. When populations grow too large, it reduces available feed for domestic livestock.

💧 Strain on water resources
In arid states much like New Mexico, water is limited. Horses often gather around the same water sources used by livestock and wildlife, increasing pressure on those systems.

🌱 Overgrazing & land degradation
Too many animals on the land—of any kind—can lead to overgrazing, soil erosion, and loss of native vegetation.

🐮 Impact on ranching families
Healthy rangeland is essential for producers. When forage is limited, it directly affects livestock production and the livelihoods of agricultural families.

Strong industries are built by leaders who invest in people, not just production. Linda Davis was one of those leaders.

Linda Davis was a respected cattlewoman, business leader, and advocate for the beef industry. Alongside her husband, she helped build one of the most successful cattle operations in the United States. Beyond the ranch, she was known for her commitment to leadership, education, and the industry's future.

She played a key role in national and state cattle organizations. Throughout her career, she was a strong voice for producers and worked to create opportunities for the next generation of agricultural leaders.

Her belief in mentorship and leadership development continues today through the Linda Davis Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Academy, a program of the New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association designed to equip young producers with the skills, knowledge, and connections needed to serve the cattle industry.

Linda Davis’s legacy lives on through the leaders she inspired, the programs created in her name, and the generations of cattlemen and women she helped guide.

🌱 Viramontes Farms

Cole Viramontes is a third-generation farmer continuing the legacy started by his grandfather. His favorite place to be is out in the fields—“playing” in the dirt—where he focuses on building healthy soil through innovative fertility practices and regenerative approaches designed to sustain the land for future generations. His passion for soil and plant health reflects a deep respect for stewardship and long-term sustainability.

Jamie Viramontes is a New Mexico State University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business and Economics. She has a lifelong passion for agriculture and for promoting the industry that supports rural communities across New Mexico.

At Viramontes Farms, the family grows a diverse mix of crops, including onions, watermelons, green chile, pecans, wheat, alfalfa, and more. Together, Cole and Jamie are proud to help manage a multigenerational family farm while raising their three young children to appreciate the agricultural lifestyle and love the land. They believe wholeheartedly in doing whatever it takes to keep the family-farm legacy alive.

This is the Face of the West—rooted in tradition, guided by innovation, and built for the future.
