Horses Reflect Your Emotions Back to You ...
Yes, horses are capable of feeling emotions, forming strong social bonds, and showing affection through a range of behaviors. They can experience fear, joy, and anxiety, and they form deep, lasting connections with other horses and humans based on trust and mutual respect. Research has also shown that horses can recognize and interpret human emotions.
They feel a wide range of emotions: Horses can feel fear, joy, affection, and frustration. They also have a high degree of social intelligence, empathy, and can display feelings of grief.
By S.L.D. Ahl Equine Rescue
They form strong bonds: As herd animals, they are highly social and can form deep attachments. These bonds are built on trust and loyalty, and they can also form these bonds with humans.
They show affection through behavior: Horses can't verbally say "I love you," but they show affection in ways that are comparable to human interactions. Signs of trust and affection include a lowered heart rate, relaxed posture, soft eyes, and approaching you when they see you.
They mirror human emotions: Horses are highly attuned to human moods and can "catch" and reflect your emotional state, a phenomenon known as emotional contagion.
They have long memories: They remember both positive interactions and negative experiences with specific individuals. This allows them to form long-term bonds and also to be wary of those who have harmed them.
Research shows that horses are sentient and capable of complex feelings, including love, care, and a wide range of emotions. While they don't experience or express emotions in the same way as humans, they form strong social bonds with other horses and can form deep, trusting, and affectionate attachments with people. By S.L.D. Ahl Equine Rescue
What having feelings and love means for a horse
Because horses evolved as social prey animals, their emotional sensitivity serves as a survival tool. This deep emotional intelligence means they:
Bond with humans. Horses can form strong, lasting bonds with their human companions. This connection is built on trust, respect, and consistent positive interaction.
Exhibit empathy and cooperation. Studies show that horses can interpret human body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions to gauge their emotions. They often mirror a human's emotional state, acting calm when their handler is calm and becoming anxious when they sense fear or tension.
Remember people and experiences. Horses have long memories and remember individuals based on past interactions, whether positive or negative. This memory is holistic, meaning they remember a person's face, voice, and smell.
Grieve the loss of a companion. Horses are known to grieve the loss of other horses or even their human partners. Anecdotal evidence suggests that grief can lead to depression and a lack of appetite.
Communicate their emotional state. Horses express feelings like happiness, fear, anxiety, and affection through a variety of non-verbal cues. This includes ear position, facial expressions, and vocalizations like nickering or whinnying.
How horses show affection and care By S.L.D. Ahl Equine Rescue
Because horses don't express love in a human-like manner, it's important to understand their own language of affection. Behaviors that indicate a horse feels bonded to a person include:
Voluntarily approaching you when you enter their pasture or stable.
Nickering or whinnying in greeting when they see you.
Seeking physical contact through nudging, nuzzling, or resting their head on you.
By S.L.D. Ahl Equine Rescue
Grooming you by gently nibbling at your clothing or hair, similar to how they groom other horses.
Relaxing in your presence, showing signs like a lowered head, relaxed muzzle, and a decreased heart rate.
Following you freely without a lead or halter.

It would seem there is a core group of approximately ten to twenty privately owned equine/horse rescues that are clearly involved in questionable activities. All donations should be sent as restricted funds. Understanding Restricted Funds: Restricted funds are donations designated by donors to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for a specific purpose, project, or time, and must be used only for that stated purpose. Unlike unrestricted funds, which give nonprofits the opportunity to determine their use, and in many cases are used for personal use. This is how donors can gain authority over their donations and ensure they are used as intended. Donors can add any stipulations they can think of. Restricted funds require careful tracking and adherence to donor stipulations, and non-compliance can lead to severe consequences. The core characteristic of a restricted fund is that the donor specifies exactly how the money can be used. These restrictions are legally binding, meaning the recipient organization cannot use the funds for other purposes without the donor's written permission to lift the restriction. Examples include donations for specific projects or funds that must be used for specific purposes. Look out for fake fundraising campaigns, where fraudsters leverage social media platforms with emotional stories and fake testimonials to collect donations. Many nonprofits ask for wire transfers, which can be a red flag. Nonprofits that use high-pressure tactics, are unclear about how donations are used, or claim to have facilities or services they don't really have should be viewed with suspicion. Any nonprofit that is unwilling to accept restricted funds should be seen as a scammer. All concerned persons should attend an equine auction to see firsthand the mark-up on bailout horses. It's going to make faithful donors really mad. Our sole purpose is to educate the public and control the well-trained, cared-for, gentle family horse industry. These horses show up at auctions fat and sassy, but sadly, most go to slaughter. Fact: we can't save them all. We're allowing well-trained, cared-for, gentle family horses to be sent to slaughter while rescues focus on saving untrained, poor-condition, old, crippled, blind, and injured horses. They'll claim the horses didn't make it, write a sad story, and ask for more donations. Unless you've seen an equine animal being euthanized firsthand, don't call it an act of kindness. It's painful to watch, and with over 40 years in the industry, I still get a lump in my throat. Although vets have made equine drugs hard to get, there are still ways to get what you need. I recommend getting multiple opinions and using university veterinarian schools for serious medical conditions. We recommend all equine owners invest in equine veterinarian manuals. Ever noticed the lack of forage in rescue pens? Equine animals should have access to good-quality hay, pasture, or other forage 24/7. Many rescues beg for donations to save horses from slaughter, violating federal regulations for transporting slaughter-bound horses, which include a 6-hour rest period and access to food, water, and rest. Horses must be given adequate space, separated from aggressive horses, and not overcrowded in trailers. Electric cattle prods are not allowed, except in life-threatening situations. Horses must be able to stand on all four legs without assistance or be euthanized by a vet. Foals must be at least six months old, and horses can't be totally blind or heavily bred. When violations are observed, report them to the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) or local law enforcement. Contact APHIS Investigative and Enforcement Services or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for worker whistleblower protection. As someone with over 40 years of experience as an equine producer and trainer, I feel obligated to speak out. I've spent time as a traveling equine clinician and come from a family of well-recognized equine trainers. I consider myself fortunate to have been raised among true horsemen. I moved from North Texas to Central West Kansas in 2002.

During a family hike, a 9-year-old boy with autism wandered off into the forest and vanished. Search teams scoured the woods all night — nothing.

At sunrise, he walked out of the trees, muddy but safe. When his mother asked how he found his way back, he said softly, “The wolves guided me.”

No one believed him — until a week later, a hunter’s game camera revealed the truth: the boy walking between two wolves, one leading, one guarding behind.

Experts were stunned. “It’s empathy,” one biologist said. “They recognized his fear and protected him.”

His mother wasn’t surprised. “He’s always felt connected to animals,” she said. “I believed him the whole time.”

Now, locals say that on quiet nights, soft howls echo through the trees — a lullaby from the wild that once watched over a lost child.

Even in the face of death, a mother bear refused to let go.

Amid the chaos of the wildfires, a police officer found a sight that silenced the hardened first responders — a mother bear sitting in a burned car, cradling her lifeless cub.

The cub had died from smoke inhalation, but she wouldn’t leave her baby. She stayed eyes full of grief, guarding with her life what was left of her baby.

When rescuers arrived, it took hours of patience before they were able to remove her cub.

Even in the ruins of fire and ash, the mother bear reminds us that animals are capable of feeling and expressing real love.

Food for thought. Founders & Democracy
We have grown accustomed to hearing that we are a democracy; such was never the intent. 1 Our Founders had an opportunity to establish a democracy in America and chose not to. In fact, the Founders made clear that we were not, and were never to become, a democracy:

[D]democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security, or the rights of property; and have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths. 2 James Madison

Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit su***de. 3 John Adams

A democracy is a volcano which conceals the fiery materials of its own destruction. These will produce an eruption and carry desolation in their way. 4 The known propensity of a democracy is to licentiousness [excessive license] which the ambitious call, and ignorant believe to be liberty. 5 Fisher Ames, Author of the House Language for the First Amendment

We have seen the tumult of democracy terminate . . . as [it has] everywhere terminated, in despotism. . . . Democracy! savage and wild. Thou who wouldst bring down the virtuous and wise to thy level of folly and guilt. 6 Gouverneur Morris, Signer and Penman of the Constitution

[T]he experience of all former ages had shown that of all human governments, democracy was the most unstable, fluctuating and short-lived. 7 John Quincy Adams

A simple democracy . . . is one of the greatest of evils. 8 Benjamin Rush, Signer of the Declaration

In democracy . . . there are commonly tumults and disorders. . . . Therefore a pure democracy is generally a very bad government. It is often the most tyrannical government on earth. 9 Noah Webster

Pure democracy cannot subsist long nor be carried far into the departments of state, it is very subject to caprice and the madness of popular rage. 10 John Witherspoon, Signer of the Declaration

It may generally be remarked that the more a government resembles a pure democracy the more they abound with disorder and confusion. 11 Zephaniah Swift, Author of America’s First Legal Text

Many Americans today seem to be unable to define the difference between the two, but there is a difference, a big difference. That difference rests in the source of authority.

Democracy & Republic Definitions
A pure democracy operates by direct majority vote of the people. When an issue is to be decided, the entire population votes on it; the majority wins and rules.

A republic differs in that the general population elects representatives who then pass laws to govern the nation.

A democracy is the rule by majority feeling (what the Founders described as a “mobocracy” 12). A republic is rule by law.

If the source of law for a democracy is the popular feeling of the people, then what is the source of law for the American republic? According to Founder Noah Webster:

[O]ur citizens should early understand that the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament, or the Christian religion. 13

The American Republic
The transcendent values of Biblical natural law were the foundation of the American republic. Consider the stability this provides: in our republic, murder will always be a crime, for it is always a crime according to the Word of God. however, in a democracy, if majority of the people decide that murder is no longer a crime, murder will no longer be a crime.

America’s immutable principles of right and wrong were not based on the rapidly fluctuating feelings and emotions of the people but rather on what Montesquieu identified as the “principles that do not change.” 14

Benjamin Rush similarly observed:

[W]here there is no law, there is no liberty; and nothing deserves the name of law but that which is certain and universal in its operation upon all the members of the community. 15

In the American republic, the “principles which did not change” and which were “certain and universal in their operation upon all the members of the community” were the principles of Biblical natural law. In fact, so firmly were these principles ensconced in the American republic that early law books taught that government was free to set its own policy only if God had not ruled in an area. For example, Blackstone’s Commentaries explained:

To instance in the case of murder: this is expressly forbidden by the Divine. . . . If any human law should allow or enjoin us to commit it we are bound to transgress that human law. . . . But, with regard to matters that are . . . not commanded or forbidden by those superior laws such, for instance, as exporting of wool into foreign countries; here the . . . legislature has scope and opportunity to interpose. 16

The Founders echoed that theme:

All [laws], however, may be arranged in two different classes. 1) Divine. 2) Human. . . . But it should always be remembered that this law, natural or revealed, made for men or for nations, flows from the same Divine source: it is the law of God. . . . Human law must rest its authority ultimately upon the authority of that law which is Divine. 17 James Wilson, Signer of the Constitution; U. S. Supreme Court Justice

[T]he law . . . dictated by God Himself is, of course, superior in obligation to any other. It is binding over all the globe, in all countries, and at all times. No human laws are of any validity if contrary to this. 18Alexander Hamilton, Signer of the Constitution

[T]he . . . law established by the Creator . . . extends over the whole globe, is everywhere and at all times binding upon mankind. . . . [This] is the law of God by which he makes his way known to man and is paramount to all human control. 19 Rufus King, Signer of the Constitution

Conclusion
The Founders understood that Biblical values formed the basis of the republic and that the republic would be destroyed if the people’s knowledge of those values should ever be lost.

A republic is the highest form of government devised by man, but it also requires the greatest amount of human care and maintenance. If neglected, it can deteriorate into a variety of lesser forms, including a democracy (a government conducted by popular feeling); anarchy (a system in which each person determines his own rules and standards); oligarchy (a government run by a small council or a group of elite individuals): or dictatorship (a government run by a single individual). As John Adams explained:

[D]emocracy will soon degenerate into an anarchy; such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes and no man’s life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure, and every one of these will soon mould itself into a system of subordination of all the moral virtues and intellectual abilities, all the powers of wealth, beauty, wit, and science, to the wanton pleasures, the capricious will, and the execrable [abominable] cruelty of one or a very few. 20

Understanding the foundation of the American republic is a vital key toward protecting it.

1 An example of this is demonstrated in the anecdote where, having concluded their work on the Constitution, Benjamin Franklin walked outside and seated himself on a public bench. A woman approached him and inquired, “Well, Dr. Franklin, what have you done for us?” Franklin quickly responded, “My dear lady, we have given to you a republic–if you can keep it.” Taken from “America’s Bill of Rights at 200 Years,” by former Chief Justice Warren E. It takes a heart of gold (or a serious dose of crazy) to accept the wild challenges that come with animal rescues. I mean, who needs sleep when you can spend your nights worrying about furry friends in need? And don't even get me started on the whole tax-exempt status thing - it's a real party. Establishing it has become quick and simple, because who doesn't love a good tax break? But seriously, have you ever wondered how much of your donation actually goes to helping animals, or just to lining the pockets of organization executives? It's like, where's the accountability? If you're looking for an animal nonprofit, there are many worthy organizations out there, including schools, riding programs, college research programs, rescues, shelters, and therapy programs. But let's get real, some animal welfare organizations are all talk and no action - they don't actually 'rescue' animals or have any hands-on care facilities. They just claim their nonprofit status by bringing awareness to animal cruelty. And just because you agree with an organization on one topic, doesn't mean you'll agree with everything they support. I believe we all have the right to choose who we want to donate to. For some, it may be an organization that's all about animal liberation. To each their own, right? We have the power to request and receive information from every government organization, including those with 501(c)(3) status. It's time to open our eyes to organizations that take in donations but don't actually have any animal facilities. And let's talk about horses - many people consider riding a hobby, but for others, it's a lifeline to independence. There's a need for more horses to become therapy animals for people with special needs. But it's frustrating to see older horses, ideal for these programs, being shipped off to slaughter or being offered by fake rescues at outrageous prices. It's like, come on people, let's put a stop to these killer horse traders teaming up with nonprofits. The fact is, auction horses are being bought for pennies on the pound, and then sold for a pretty profit. It's not about saving horses, it's about making a buck. If these rescues really wanted to save animals from slaughter, they'd be buying them at auction. I've been in the industry for over 40 years, and I've seen some stuff. My wife and I have our own self-supported rescue, and we do our part to help animals in need. We train or retrain and establish worth in rescue animals for all the right reasons. It's not about the money or the fame, it's about making a difference.

By S.L.D. Did you know that the ASPCA is like that one aunt who always talks about helping the poor animals, but in reality, they're just using all the donated cash to throw fancy parties for themselves? Yeah, because those poor executives need a bonus to afford their summer homes. They consistently air commercials on television, but here's the thing: they're not affiliated with local SPCA organizations. No, they don't provide financial support to local animal shelters. A significant portion of their funding is allocated towards executive compensation, bonuses, and fundraising efforts. We strongly advise against donating to the ASPCA. Instead, consider supporting local rescue organizations and shelters that you have personally visited. You know, the ones that actually care about the animals. We invite you to conduct your own investigation and share your findings, along with any photographs you may have taken, which will be published. Our goal is to provide you with the necessary information to make informed decisions when engaging with non-profit organizations. ASPCA vs. SPCA: What's the difference? Were you aware that SPCA animal shelters across the United States are not affiliated with the ASPCA or even each other; they're all separate organizations. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is headquartered in New York City, was examined in an investigative report by CBS which looked into the ASPCA's fundraising practices and the allocation of donor funds. While many individuals assume that the ASPCA provides financial support to local shelters, no SPCA organization is affiliated with the ASPCA. We at "For AHL The Right Reasons" encourage you to investigate before you donate. There are many people out there making it work on a shoestring budget. Where your time (a few hours a week) would be a gift greater than your donations. We have built some really great friendships. Be straightforward with them. They have the right to be leery when we call or contact them out of the blue, wondering why we contacted them, what we really want. We have the right to contact public organizations. Make your intentions clear, that you are working with others to ensure their donations are being utilized as intended. Set up an appointment and ask if you can take a few pictures. We are compiling informative and check off worksheets. Including questions and legal rights "We The People" have when entering Non-Profits facilities coming soon. All SPCA organizations are 501(c)3 tax-exempt charitable organizations. SPCA stands for Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. These organizations operate independently and are governed separately. Various countries have their own SPCA organizations, such as Africa, which has several, including the Botswana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA), the General/Cairo SPCA in Egypt, the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA), the Tierschutzverein (SPCA) in Namibia, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) in South Africa, and the Zimbabwe Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Asia is also home to several SPCA organizations, including the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong), the Iran Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tehran, Iran), the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Israel, the Public Welfare Corporation Japan Animal Welfare Association, and the Philippine Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Europe has several SPCA organizations as well, including the Royal Society of Animal Protection Veeweyde in Belgium, the Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) in France, SPCA ITALIA Protezione Animali in Italy, the SPCA Norge in Norway, and the Romanian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). North America is home to several SPCA organizations, including the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the United States. The Caribbean also has several SPCA organizations, including the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (J.S.P.C.A.) and the Vincentian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Oceania is home to several SPCA organizations, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Australia (RSPCA Australia), the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Papua New Guinea. Please feel free to share.

We are getting started up and running are are looking for feed back in either directon. Finding Legitimate Equine Rescue of any type.

It takes a big heart,
equine organization. Must be will to accept the specific challenges Animal Rescues, Nonprofit Organizations come with.

Establishing Tax Exempt Status at the federal and state level has become quick and simple. Problem lies with who is to hold them accountable. If you are looking for an equine or animal charity, there are many worthy organizations; there are schools? riding programs and college research programs, rescue programs and shelters, and even therapy programs. You may wonder how much of your donation actually goes to help horses, or just to line pockets? Where is the accountability? For starters although there is not currently much regulation placed on animal rescue facilities "We The People"have a great deal of power in holding them accountable.
We have the Authority monitor such facilities ourselves. Publish our findings and change public opinion. We can make a difference that will set residence require accountability to the "People".
Some equine welfare organizations do not actually ‘rescue’ horses, or have hands-on care for animals. These non care welfare organizations are educational groups claiming long range goals. **
Just because we may agree with an organization on one topic, doesn’t mean that you will agree with everything that the charity supports or espouses. *. I believe as an American I have the right to choose who I want to donate to for some it maybe be an organization that has as its ultimate goal the “liberation” of all animals from their enslavement. That to each the right of choice. We have the right and ability to request and receive from every government organization, this includes all holding 501(c)(3) status. We the public want to know what is their federal tax-exempt number? Are they a 501(c)(3) (a status which allows them to accept tax-deductible donations)? Are they a non-profit, a not-for-profit, or a corporation? If you don’t know what these terms mean, educate yourself. It is going to open our eyes to the many rescue groups out there that are either not
legitimate, or are careless with their money or are taking in millions every year, do not have one single animal facility and give less than 3% of their annual revenue to any regional or national rescue organizations.

• I am offering open access to supporters who want to monitor animal care Locally or Nationally.
• Training programs
• Established criteria for when nonprofits should decide between euthanasia and rehabilitation
• An established adoption program with post-adoption monitoring. "
In addition, representatives of legitimate equine rescue organizations should be able to answer the following questions:
• Who are the organization’s advising and practicing veterinarians?
• Who are the advising and practicing farriers?
• Does the organization actually find homes for the animals? Will references be provided? *Actual number of animals adopted per donations received.

There are great opportunities to receive Grants for Therapeutic Riding Programs
Although many people consider riding to be a hobby, for others riding is literally a lifeline to independence. Many horses are becoming therapists for people with special needs, helping those with a variety of physical and mental disabilities to improve motor skills, develop and strengthen muscles, achieve independence and, most importantly, develop self-reliance and self confidence. I am so frustrated seeing older horses ideal for such programs being direct shipped from a loving home to slaughter. We have to put a stop to these killer horse traders team up with 501 c 3 so called non profits. Horses are 10 to 50 cents a pound. Horses selling on the upper scale are going to be well trained registered animals. These as items are not trying to save horse they are marking them to up 200-300%. Their horse traders. If these rescues really wanted to save these animals from slaughter buying at auction for a third of what their begging for. Been In the industry over 40 yrs. Breeders/ trainers originally from Texas. Have rich family history in equine industry. Moved to Kansas 2005 my wife has a totally Self Supported rescue, I help help out with. We made the self supported choose For AHL The Right Reasons.
