In November 1808, a delegation of Osage chiefs stood on a bluff above the Missouri River and gave up more land than most of us can picture. In a single afternoon, the Great and Little Osage ceded 52 million acres — nearly all of present-day Missouri and northern Arkansas — to the United States government.

The Osage had ruled this territory for generations, running trade networks along the Missouri and Osage Rivers and making seasonal buffalo hunts onto the plains. The treaty at Fort Osage, negotiated by fur trader Pierre Chouteau on behalf of the U.S., offered the Osage a trading post, a blacksmith, and a yearly payment in exchange for nearly everything they knew as home. One Osage leader later recalled the moment bitterly, describing how the “Great Father” in Washington kept returning to take a little more, until there was nothing left to give.

It was the first of several treaties that would push the Osage first into Kansas, then finally into Oklahoma by the 1870s — where their descendants remain today as the Osage Nation, headquartered in Pawhuska. The bluff where it happened still stands in Sibley, Missouri, marked today by a reconstructed Fort Osage that most visitors don’t realize sits atop the spot where a nation’s homeland changed hands forever.

For the first time in recorded history, temperatures in the Arctic Circle have reached 100°F.

On June 20, 2020, the remote Siberian town of Verkhoyansk, Russia, recorded a staggering temperature of 38°C (100.4°F), a reading officially verified by the World Meteorological Organization as the highest ever recorded in the Arctic.

Renowned for its extreme winter temperatures that routinely plunge to near -90°F, Verkhoyansk typically sees mild June highs in the mid-60s. This historic temperature anomaly was driven by a prolonged, intense heatwave fueled by a trapped mass of hot air—a phenomenon scientists say would be virtually impossible without the compounding effects of human-induced climate change.

This milestone underscores a worrying broader trend: the Arctic is warming nearly three times faster than the rest of the planet. Experts warn that rising polar temperatures are accelerating permafrost thaw, reducing sea ice coverage, and fueling more frequent, severe wildfires. As global temperatures continue to climb, this extreme weather event serves as a stark reminder of how rapidly the Earth's most fragile environments are transforming, creating downstream ecological impacts that will be felt far beyond the polar regions.

Born in 1956, Mae Jemison received degrees in Chemical Engineering and African American Studies and went on to become a medical doctor and officer in the Peace Corps.

In 1983, after watching Sally Ride, Dr. Jemison decided to apply to the astronaut program at NASA. On September 12, 1992, she went into orbit aboard the space shuttle Endeavour as the first Black woman in space.

Dr. Jemison left NASA in 1993, continuing to work for the benefit of others as an educator, entrepreneur, and author.

She is not only an inspiration to young black & brown children but she also proves that with hard work our children can become more than rappers and entertainers.
