The Great Sword of Dunvegan is a powerful relic of Scotland’s turbulent Middle Ages, preserved at Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye. This massive two-handed claymore, dating back to the 15th–16th century, was wielded by William “Long Sword” MacLeod, the 7th Chief of Clan MacLeod. Its size and craftsmanship reflect the martial prestige and authority of a clan leader in an era when strength and loyalty determined survival.

William MacLeod earned the name “Long Sword” not only for his weapon but also for his role in the clan’s military struggles. The claymore would have been carried into fierce battles that defined the clan’s destiny, making it both a weapon of war and a symbol of leadership. Among these conflicts, the Battle of Bloody Bay in the 1480s stands out as one of the bloodiest struggles between rival Highland clans and the Lords of the Isles.

Today, the Great Sword is preserved at Dunvegan Castle, where it serves as a tangible link to the MacLeod clan’s storied past. Visitors can stand before the weapon and imagine the battles it once saw, the hands that wielded it, and the turbulent history of medieval Scotland it silently represents. This makes it not only a treasured heirloom but also a cultural icon of Highland heritage.
