Seniors in our community face limits every day. And when you factor in fixed income and the expensive medical issues that come with growing older, these limits can make it easy for seniors to quietly fall through the community's cracks.

With your help, programs like our food pantry grocery delivery service, Project ElderCool, emergency utility and rent assistance, and Christmas support are making a difference.

Together, we can lend a dignified hand up to seniors in Kansas City.

During heat waves like this one, air conditioners save lives.

Through Project ElderCool, an air conditioner can also serve as the starting point on the path towards stability.

"Many times when our team arrives at a senior's home, we find they're living with an overwhelming list of home issues and no idea where to turn," says Kayla McAbee, BSC Programs Assistant.

The dangerous heat was the final straw that brought them to ask for help.

“Installing the air conditioner gives us a chance to get to know them, understand the struggles they’re facing, and set them up with the resources to take the next step forward."

Sometimes, life gets stormy. 🌩

Having a place to turn when the clouds roll in can make all the difference.

When a tree limb knocked down the power line in Stewart’s* backyard, he was left with the expensive task of repairing the apparatus on his own. The cost threatened to set him behind on all of his bills - a dangerous position for a senior relying on social security income.

Your support covered Stewart’s water bill, freeing up space in his fixed budget to cover his other necessary expenses.

We can’t prevent the storms. Thank you for helping us provide a refuge when they hit.

Today is - the perfect chance to celebrate the dedicated young women who have made possible all summer, Ann and Sophia.

“This summer, Ann and Sophia have helped us navigate the ever-changing assistance landscape,” shared Hannah Brockway, BSC Director of Operations and Outreach.

“The interns have been stationed in One City Café as well as the pantry, helping guests apply for reduced fare bus passes and referring them for SNAP recertification purposes to our community partner, Harvesters - The Community Food Network.

"The work that interns do leaves a lasting impact on those we serve. Our hope is that they carry the experiences of those they have encountered with them as they begin their career journey.”

And these experiences have clearly left their mark, as multiple former interns have since joined BSC as full-time employees.

Thank you to Ann, Sophia, and all of our interns over the years for giving of yourselves to lighten the load for community members in need.
