Hello everybody, I recently was asked to tell my story at Alphapointe who enjoys sharing the stories of clients who come through their Blind training program. So, please don’t think that I was singled out for any reason. Because I’m nobody special. lol I encourage all of you to please visit their website and page. To learn more about the wonderful people who have come and gone through Alphapointe. You’ll find everyone has their own unique story to tell, mine is one of many. 😎

Michael Nava is no stranger to having to advocate for himself. Or others.

For most of his adult life, Michael has been a dedicated voice for various communities, spending the past decade passionately advocating for the blind and visually impaired.

A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Michael was an environmental health and safety specialist. He traveled all over the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, advocating and problem solving before, in 2015, he would lose his vision.

He had a bad reaction to some medication that caused his eyes to swell, which resulted in optic nerve trauma. Once the swelling had gone down, Michael was completely blind.

“I thought my life was over, that I would never be able to do anything,” he explains.
Fortunately, a portion of Michael’s retina was able to be reattached, leaving him with partial vision in one eye.

Now, Michael has taken his years of advocacy and used that experience to help others as a board or coalition member of several groups where he works on transportation issues, independent living, sports and recreation, and the promotion of activities in the blind community.

“Just because you’re blind doesn’t mean you can’t participate in sports and other activities,” says Michael. “There is no limit to what we can do. I visit Washington, D.C., every year to talk to my legislatures and remind them that we are real people.”

Would Michael change anything he has gone through?

“I have had to deal with biases based on my skin, but now it’s because of my blindness, but I wouldn’t change it,” he says. “I have dealt with my fears and internal demons and overcome them. When I was sighted, I took so much for granted. Now I take notice of the feeling of the sun and wind on my skin, the smell of flowers and cut grass. I was so focused on my sight, that my life was empty, and it’s not empty anymore.”

I’m happy to say, that Don and Jody Mulik, Susie Stanzel and myself. Had a fantastic time participating at the Kansas School for the Blind, Blind All-Stars 5K Walk/run fundraising event. The weather was perfect for this fun outdoor event where the Johnson-Wyandotte County, NFB Chapter was well represented as well as other organizations like the Achilles run group of KC, KCK community college, and many others showing their support for the school and Blind community.

Our National Federation of the Blind of Kansas chapter looks forward in continuing to show Blindness is not what define us. It motivates and strengthens us to prove we all can“live the life we want!” 😎

The Missouri NFB State convention went well, they put together a pretty good program for NFB members. Don, Jody Mulk and Susie Stanzal, also attended the convention and was able to help me from time to time at the exhibit table I had set-up. Tom Page, did a fantastic job as the National Federation Rep, for President Mark RiccoBono. He was very active, engaging and participated in many of the breakout sessions and events throughout Missouri state convention. Everyone I spoke with was very impressed and he was well liked by all.

On Friday, several of us, including members from Kansas participated in their “National Park Challenge” and we were able to visit the “Harry S.Truman House” with a guided tour. We learn a lot of fascinating information & facts about the Truman family, as well as learning that Harry S. Truman was technically our first legally blind/Visually Impaired, President (By today’s standards)… his vision rating was 20/400 and he used the magnification devices of the day to help him read newspapers and books. We were told that the way he was able to pass his vision exam for the army, was he was very intelligent and memorized the eye chart ahead of time! lol... We all, were able to apply and receive our “National Park Access Pass” that allows “People with disabilities“ free entry to any national park in the US and this is free for life.

Back at convention, I was part of Missouri’s Sports and Rec division who had several assessable sports games set up for people to try and play with from 8 to 10 AM. I personally gave a demonstration on how the blind play “Blind darts” games, I used to love to play darts back in the day.

The event table went well. Had people stop by to talk, take material annd ask questions. It was a great experience and I look forward to doing it again. I also was able to speak with various vendors at this convention and have several confirmed exhibitors wanting to participate in Kansas state convention.

Overall, I enjoyed myself, a happy experience in made many a new friends, Contacts and was able to network the whole 3 days while I was there.

I plan on talking with Tom and Donna about having an outing of our own, if not at this upcoming convention, definitely at next year‘s Convention in Wichita, KS, and take advantage of the hotel's location to a nearby park.

I attended a meeting and a well known speaker started off his seminar holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?" Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this."
He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, "Who still wants it...?" Still the hands were up in the air. "Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. "Now, who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.
"My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We may feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value."
"Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE."
"You are special, don't EVER forget it."
If you do not pass this on, you may never know the lives it touches, the hurting hearts it speaks to, or the hope that it may bring.
Count your blessings, not your problems.

Hello, fellow advocates, A quick update, I just heard about. everyone’s efforts at Washington DC seminar produced some great work on increasing the cosponsor count on the Medical Device Nonvisual Having Accessibility Act in the House of Representatives. I was told we gained the following 11 new cosponsors to H.R. 1328:

Rep. Himes, James A. [D-CT-4]
Rep. Sherman, Brad [D-CA-32]
Rep. Ivey, Glenn [D-MD-4]
Rep. Neguse, Joe [D-CO-2]
Rep. Pettersen, Brittany [D-CO-7]
Rep. Davis, Donald G. [D-NC-1]
Rep. Caraveo, Yadira [D-CO-8]
Rep. Stansbury, Melanie Ann [D-NM-1]
Rep Kean, Thomas H. [R-NJ-7]
Rep. Mullin, Kevin [D-CA-15]
Rep. Takano, Mark [D-CA-39]

I am happy to say, this means there are now up to 72 cosponsors, at last count on H.R. 1328 which is fantastic news. There is still a lot of work that still needs to be done. We need to continue work on both H.R. 1328 and S.3621. These new cosponsor are a result of the great work all the teams efforts, during Washington Seminar.

The ADA is Under Attack – Tell the Kansas Legislature to Back Off and Protect Disability Rights!

Hello, Kansas Advocates,

I wanted to share this with everyone because, currently these, Kansas bills, HB 2423 and SB 258, attack the ADA by dramatically limiting the ability of Kansans with disabilities to protect and enforce their rights under the ADA.

To read the full article, it is list below the Link:

This affects all Kansans with disabilities, including us, the blind community.
Use the Link below, to read & add your name to protest this action and say NO, to limiting our rights.

https://drckansas.salsalabs.org/ada/index.html?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=c1ec3b04-25db-4ba9-bc36-025a23b040e7

From the Disability Rights, Center (DRC) of Kansas; KS- HB 2423 and SB 258 attack the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by dramatically limiting the ability of Kansans with disabilities to protect and enforce their rights under the ADA.

These bills say that a Kansan who brings an ADA claim in court can then be sued by the business violating the ADA! Under this bill, the business violating the ADA can sue to make the disabled person (who is typically on a fixed income) pay the business’ attorney fees and monetary damages! Even if the disabled person wins their accessibility lawsuit, they may still have to pay the business' lawyers.

That’s outrageous!

The ADA is both fair and balanced. Leaders like former U.S. Senators Bob Dole (Republican – Kansas) and Tom Harkin (Democrat – Iowa) made certain of that. Now lobbyists in Topeka want to undo the balance struck in the ADA. They want to punish disabled people who are forced to use the courts to make businesses accessible.

When a business violates the ADA and the person with a disability wins the case, they get no money or damages. What the disabled get is an order from a judge to make it so disabled people can shop at the business. People with disabilities are on fixed incomes, so when they use their very limited money to hire an attorney and they win an ADA case, of course they should be able to obtain attorney’s fees to reimburse their expenses. However, attorney’s fees are never guaranteed.

The bills in the Kansas Legislature are unfair to Kansas disabled people who are just trying to get an accessibility problem fixed. These dangerous bills victimize people with disabilities, as the disabled Kansas may now have to pay attorney’s fees and damages to the same business denying their rights under the ADA.

Tell your Kansas Legislators to oppose HB2423 and SB258 and to protect the ADA.
