Thank you for supporting our mission, GFL Environmental Kansas City! Together we are turning surplus into suppers.

We are proud to announce that we recently presented a $7,500 check to Pete's Garden alongside The Kansas City Chiefs! Pete's Garden is a local nonprofit dedicated to reducing food waste and tackling food insecurity across Kansas City. The organization repackages surplus prepared food from caterers, restaurants, and venues into wholesome dinner meals, serving local families in need.

The fact that about 1/3 of healthy food ends up in the trash instead of on a dinner table is hard to believe, especially as families in the Kansas City area struggle with food insecurity. Together with our food donors, volunteers and agency partners we can work to change that for our city.

It’s 9/25 and we are celebrating Dolly Day by giving love to the moms (and dads) working 9 to 5, 7 to 3, nights, weekends, and every shift in between. Here’s to all the parents making it work, whatever their hours!

Pete’s Garden is here to make the working day easier by providing wholesome, ready-to-heat meals and giving more time for family.

The kids at Operation Breakthrough threw a surprise birthday party for one of our favorite volunteers, Eileen McKeon. We've always known she was a star, but NBC Nightly News recently shared her light with the rest of the world. Happy 93rd birthday Eileen!

Kansas City kindergarteners and teachers came together to celebrate the 93rd birthday of a volunteer who reads to their class a few times a month. The surprise, moving classroom volunteer Eileen McKeon to tears. NBC News’ Tom Llamas has the story.

At Pete's Garden we try to serve as many people as we can, but the need is always greater. This means we have a waitlist of social service agencies wanting to share meals with the families they serve.

Guadalupe Centers was on that list until one Friday this summer when we anticipated a large quantity of donated food that we didn't want to go to waste. Volunteer Manager Jennifer Olson quickly connected with Guadalupe Centers and along with Aimee Sesler, personally delivered the meals. They helped set up the first distribution so families would have good food for the weekend. That's food rescue at its best!

Since 1919, Guadalupe Centers has worked to improve lives in Latino communities throughout the Kansas City area. We are proud to partner with them to make mealtime easier for families. Since February of 2022, Mike Goodman has been a driving force behind Pete's Garden. He started when we only had only one staff person: founder and executive director Tamara Weber.

Originally part of a rotation of devoted men from the Knights of Columbus at Church of the Ascension, Mike, along with friends Dan Tira and Dave Fritz, has recovered thousands of pounds of surplus food over the years.

When he's not picking up and delivering for Pete's Garden, Mike helps recover food from local grocery stores and brings it to other organizations.

Thank you, Mike, for your dedication to providing food for people who need it. We could not do this important work without your help.

It's North American Grilled Veggies Day - who knew?! Today our volunteers are packing delicious and wholesome meals loaded with vegetables for families to take home. Thank you to our food donor partners for helping redirect this amazing food!
