🏘️ A major federal housing bill has passed Congress—and several parts could directly support the needs of Kansas City’s Historic Northeast.

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act includes provisions focused on repairing aging homes, converting vacant and abandoned buildings into housing, supporting infill development, expanding small-dollar mortgage access, and helping communities plan for future housing growth.

For the Northeast Neighborhood Coalition, this could mean new opportunities to advocate for resources that preserve existing homes, address vacancy and neglect, support responsible development, and expand pathways to homeownership.

The legislation still requires implementation, and funding will not become available overnight. NNC will continue following the process and identifying how our neighborhoods can be prepared to benefit.

Housing policy matters locally—and our neighborhoods deserve a seat at the table.

🚨 The Perky Brothers Transfer & Storage Building ( 3212 Independence Ave) has landed on the KCMO dangerous building list. This would be another devastating loss to this corner in Scarritt.

This structure was built in 1921 by C.B. Sloan (The architect behind Tiffany Castle in PH and the Rockhurst College admin building) as their second location.

This building was well known for its stacked windows, terra-cotta parapet, and a large clock built in over the front door (long gone). This was considered a state-of-the-art facility when completed.

Established in 1883 by Daniel Jefferson Perky and his brother Albin, they set out to become pioneers in the "safe storage" concept. Daniel was highly philanthropic and reinvested a ton of company capital into Northeast and the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood.

The Housing Committee has submitted a letter to the property owners, requesting an update and a meeting.
