A political action committee seeking to oust Mayor Ryan Hunter before his term expires can begin gathering signatures after successfully filing a recall petition.

The mayor has posted a statement about the recall petition. Two sentences from it, in his words:

"Before the vote, I disclosed my employment with Flathead Land Trust and provided a detailed explanation on the record as to why there was no conflict of interest."

"For these reasons, the City Attorney was incorrect in recommending that I recuse myself from that vote. Despite her recommendation, I was free under the law to disregard her recommendation and participate in the vote."

That is the petition. He was employed by the Land Trust. The City Attorney told him to step aside. He voted anyway. Not cameras, not council pay, not who won last November. One vote, after his own attorney told him not to.

He says the county approved the petition only on form, not merits. That's correct, and it's how Montana recall law works. The county checks the form. The voters judge the merits. That's the vote a signature asks for.

He says people wanted him out in January. Some did. A recall petition needs a legal ground, and the April vote supplied one. That's why the petition cites the April vote and nothing else.

Signing doesn't remove him. It puts the question to the voters of Kalispell. He's entitled to make his case to them. So are we.

Someone from our team may knock on your door in the next few weeks. Here's what it's about, so you're not guessing.

In April, Mayor Ryan Hunter cast the tie-breaking vote on the Kalispell land use plan while employed by the Flathead Land Trust. The city attorney had flagged the conflict. Residents asked him to step aside. He voted anyway.

That's the whole issue. Not cameras, not council pay, not party. One vote, one conflict.

The petition is approved by Flathead County Elections (Recall 001-2026). We need 3,807 signatures from registered Kalispell city voters by December 15.

Signing doesn't remove him. It puts the question to a vote of the whole city. If you'd rather the city decide than a committee, that's exactly what a signature does.

CIRCULATORS — READ THIS BEFORE YOUR FIRST SHEET GOES OUT

Here is how signed sheets get from your clipboard to the county. No variations.

CHECK-IN IS EVERY MONDAY, 5:00 PM, BLACK R***E COFFEE COMPANY.

THE SHEET
• Use only the approved sheet you got from me. No edits, no other version. A sheet that isn't the approved form can get every signature on it thrown out. Need more? Message me.
• Sign only your own sheets. Only signatures you personally watched go on the page.
• Never hand a sheet to another circulator. Never let someone else collect on your sheet.

BUNDLES
• At check-in, your signed sheets for the week go in one bundle, under one affidavit, in your name.
• Montana law caps a bundle at 25 sheets (MCA 2-16-617). Over 25? Two bundles, two affidavits. Nobody will be mad about that.
• One circulator per bundle. Never mix your sheets with anyone else's.

CHECK-IN — EVERY MONDAY, NO EXCEPTIONS
1. Bring every sheet with a signature on it. Full or partial.
2. Count sheets and signatures with me at the table.
3. Fill out the affidavit cover — sheet count, signature count, your name and address. You sign it in front of the notary. Not before. Not in the truck.
4. Notary stamps it.
5. Bundle goes into my hands. I log it, you see it logged, and from that moment it is my custody until it goes to the Election Office.
6. You leave with blank sheets and you're out the door.

CAN'T MAKE MONDAY?
Message me before, not after. We'll set a handoff. Signed sheets do not sit in a car, a kitchen drawer, or a friend's house for a week.

WHY THIS MATTERS
One bad affidavit throws out every signature under it. One wrong form throws out the page. The county will check all of it. We are giving them nothing to throw out.
