Nā Keiki O Emalia

Nā Keiki O Emalia Nā Keiki O Emalia, a program of Imua Family Services, offers peer-to-peer grief support services to children & their families.

Nā Keiki O Emalia provides support to grieving children, teens, and their families to help them heal after the death of a loved one. If children and youths do not have the opportunity to work through their grief, their trauma may be obscured for many years to come – and surface in the guise of adolescent problematic behavior, su***de, and impaired relationships for decades. Nā Keiki o Emalia (Emal

ia’s Children) received its nonprofit status from the IRS in August, 2015

Our vision: That all Maui children, teens, and their families can participate in programs to aid them in coping and healing after the loss of a loved one. ABOUT OUR HISTORY

Our organization's namesake, Emalia, was a true daughter of Hawaii, who loved the islands, its people, culture and traditions, the land, and the ocean. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, Emalia grew up on Maui, taught at Seabury Hall, married her longtime sweetheart JB Guard IV, and had a son, who turned three years old several days before she died. In 2012 Emalia was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, stage IV, a huge shock because she had always known excellent health and fitness. Immediately, Emalia went into gentle warrior mode and despite her fatigue, pain, and nausea, focused on beating the cancer. She fought it single-mindedly and never complained, focusing on regaining her good health, mothering their young son, and her husband. However, despite many, many rounds of chemotherapy and surgery, Emalia’s aggressive cancer could not be halted. Emalia died peacefully on February 10, 2014. Emalia touched many lives along her life’s journey and that so many people rallied around her during her cancer challenge attests to the love she spread and received.

The finality of death is one of the harshest and most severe realities one must come to terms with after someone has died.

You don’t need to fix grief — but you do need to know how to support it.

Grief isn’t predictable, and neither is how people experience it. That’s why so many helpers feel unsure about what to do or say.

On Wednesday, January 21, I’m hosting a free online event where I’ll share practical, compassionate ways to support others through all loss — without minimizing their pain or rushing their healing.

You’ll learn:

-what actually helps
-what to avoid
-tools that make a difference
-how to offer support that feels grounding and meaningful

💙 Today is Children’s Grief Awareness Day—a time to recognize the deep impact the loss of a loved one can have on children and teens. Grieving youth often feel unseen or alone, but even small acts of support and compassion can help them feel heard, valued and understood.

If it moves you, share this post, a thought or memory, or this meaningful video to help raise awareness about bereaved youth: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/17ThGXCJT8/

If you know a grieving child or teen here on Maui, please refer them to NKOE, where they can connect with peers, find support and engage in safe, fun activities to help them process emotions and learn healthy ways to grieve. https://discoverimua.com/na-keiki-services/

There's a little over 5 hours left to bid on some awesome auction items at Emalia's Table. It closes tonight at 11:59 PM HST! It’s down to the final hours and we’re so grateful for the generosity and aloha shown over the past week. This is your last chance to bid and support a cause that offers hope and healing to grieving children and teens across Maui County.

Now’s the time to place your final bids or “Buy It Now” on those one-of-a-kind treasures still up for grabs! From a relaxing stay at the Four Seasons Resort Maui, red light therapy sessions with Makena Health, private golf simulation, to stunning jewelry, intimate catered dinners with friends, an adventurous getaway in Keystone, Colorado and even the chance to ship your car across the Pacific currently at half the value—there’s something for everyone.

Not into bidding but still want to help? Direct donations through the auction are welcome and deeply appreciated. We’ve already received contributions ranging from $100 to $1,000—and every dollar counts. Our programs are free for all families, and we rely on events like Emalia’s Table and the generosity of people like you to keep them going. No gift is too small—or too great.

You are the reason this work is possible.

This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate 10 years of Nā Keiki O Emalia providing compassionate grief support. Since 2015, we’ve been honored to walk alongside hundreds of children through the pain of loss, and it’s thanks to our community that we’ve been able to offer this care—at no cost to families we serve.

Today is also a day close to our hearts: June 19th is Emalia’s birthday—the bright, courageous woman whose spirit inspired this entire program. Today is a celebration of her life and light, and the healing it’s sparked in hundreds of Maui’s keiki. Supporting Emalia’s Table today is a beautiful way to honor her legacy.

Thanks for checking it out!

Go peruse the auction items-- bidding is live!

Since 2015, Na Keiki O Emalia has helped grieving children and teens find hope, healing, and connection following the death of someone significant in their lives. As we honor a decade of impact, we invite your participation in our signature annual fundraiser, Emalia’s Table, taking place online now through June 19, 2025.

Emalia’s Table is a digital auction inspired by the spirit of community, connection, and the joy of coming together around a shared meal. Each year, the online fundraiser features exclusive Maui-based dining experiences at some of our island’s most celebrated foodie locales. This year, our fundraising efforts expand beyond the table to offer extraordinary experiences, unique items, luxurious getaways, and one-of-a-kind adventures sure to nurture heartfelt bonds and create lasting memories. Each bid, purchase, and donation helps to ensure that bereaved children on Maui feel supported, seen, and less alone.

All proceeds directly support Nā Keiki O Emalia’s peer-based grief support groups for children and teens who have experienced the death of a loved one. Thanks to community support generated by events like Emalia’s Table, the program has doubled its school-based programming over the past year and distributed personalized grief care packages to dozens of children across Maui County who have recently lost a loved one.

Nā Keiki O Emalia runs school and community-based peer groups. If you or your school is interested in participating, please contact us at Imua Family Services: (808) 244-7467 or [email protected]. Each group is guided by trained facilitators and designed to foster connection, emotional expression, and healing.

“Emalia loved birthdays and bringing people together, and this event is a reflection of her spirit,” says Brooke Brown, founder and Emalia’s mother. “As you share a delicious meal with loved ones, you can feel good knowing you are helping many of Maui’s keiki.”

We hope you’ll sit with us at Emalia’s Table this year in support of bereaved youth as they learn to thrive again. Together, we can offer comfort, community, and connection to Maui’s keiki when they need it most.
