Great Plains Foundation

Great Plains Foundation Great Plains Foundation is project and species focused to rehabilitate, enhance and save wildlife. We lose five elephants an hour across Africa.

Statement by the Chairman, Dereck Joubert
“Let there be no mistake, we are in the midst of the Battle for Africa right now. Every nine hours another rhino is killed in South Africa alone. In the last 50 years we have managed to lose 95% of our lions and leopards. At this rate, we can expect extinctions of lions in the next 10 to 15 years. As Hilary Clinton so carefully pointed out in a speech last

year, the bushmeat and illegal animal trade now rivals the drug trade in its scale, garnering $27 billion in trade a year. And yet, if we take the initiative right now and urgently, we can stop this from being a global disaster. We founded the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic specifically to focus attention, funding and action on lions, cheetah and leopards in Africa, and that is progressing well. There are a lot of dedicated and smart people with whom we are engaging to tackle a range of action points with 43 projects in 18 countries. Arguably, the most pressing issue for African wildlife is poaching. It goes to follow that if we are strategically acquiring large pieces of land to conserve then we also need to secure that land and its wildlife against poaching. The greatest need now, is what I call “The Battle for Africa,” and it will ultimately involve three species: lions, rhinos, and elephants. If we save those we have a hope. And if we don’t, everything else will go. We’re not going to let that happen on our watch. Many thanks,
Dereck Joubert

This Endangered Species Day, we're reminded that protecting threatened wildlife isn't only about the animals themselves, it's about restoring the living systems they depend on. Rewilding through tree planting is one of the most powerful tools we have. Through our Conservation Roots initiative, tree planting at Great Plains Conservation 's camps is approached as a long-term act of ecological restoration. Each young tree is carefully tended and nurtured, not as a symbolic gesture, but as a genuine contribution to rebuilding habitat, stabilising soil, creating shade, and strengthening entire ecosystems over time. As forests recover, so do the species that call them home. From pollinators and birds to the larger, more vulnerable animals that depend on healthy, connected landscapes. Every tree planted is a step toward a future where wildlife can truly thrive.

For generations, his storytelling has brought people closer to the beauty, complexity, and fragility of life on Earth, reminding us that curiosity, wonder, and understanding are deeply connected to conservation.

Happy Birthday, Sir David Attenborough, and thank you for continuing to inspire a deeper respect for the living world.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, reflects on David Attenborough’s 100th birthday and what the world can learn from his lifelong devotion to the natural world.

Golden light. A flick of a tail. And suddenly, it emerges: a leopard, draped across a branch or slipping through the grass in complete silence. Few moments in the wild compare to the thrill of a leopard sighting. They are masters of concealment, moving through their world largely unseen, which makes every encounter special. On International Leopard Day, we celebrate the unmistakable beauty of these iconic cats: the rosette-patterned coats, the power in their movement, and the adaptability that allows them to survive in a wide range of landscapes. Yet despite this resilience, leopards face increasing pressure from habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.

Protecting them is essential, not only for their survival, but for the health of entire ecosystems. Through projects like the Big Cats Initiative, the Great Plains Foundation is working to safeguard critical habitats, support research, and partner with local communities to ensure these remarkable animals continue to thrive in the wild.

This month, the world came together to celebrate Earth Day, which marks a global moment to reflect on our relationship with the natural world.
At the Great Plains Foundation, that responsibility is carried forward every day.

Across Botswana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, conservation is shaped by people and teams from all walks of life - Rangers, environmental educators, ecologists, farmers, communities and many conservationists, behind-the-scenes, communicating, strategising and working together for one common goal - a brighter future.

This is what it means to be part of something larger.

Today is the final day to receive the exclusive short film that reflects on the simple but important question: What Does the Earth Give Us?

More than 11,000 people. One shared moment of movement, energy, and purpose.
This past weekend at the Diacore Gaborone Marathon, our Wildlife Ranger teams showed up in full force — with energy, pride, and a strong sense of purpose. Coming from some of the most remote and ecologically vital landscapes, they stepped into the heart of the city, running not just for endurance, but in solidarity and raising awareness for the work they take on every day.

The experience itself reflected that same sense of care and coordination: strong teamwork, and a shared commitment that made the entire event both rewarding and memorable for everyone involved.

The landscapes they protect are vast, complex, and deeply life-giving.

To see more of what these spaces hold, sign up to our newsletter by April 30 2026, to receive our exclusive Earth Month film — a short reflection on the systems our teams help protect across the Okavango Delta, the savannahs of Kenya, and the Mid-Zambezi Valley.

A powerful and deeply considered moment for conservation.

We’re honoured to stand alongside the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and all partners in supporting the return of rhinos to Kidepo Valley National Park, a landscape that has been without them for over four decades. These first steps are laying the foundation for a stable, thriving population, one that will assist in restoring ecological balance and deliver lasting value to the landscape.

What the Earth provides is tangible, quantifiable, and experienced. 🌍✨

Freshwater systems that sustain entire ecosystems.
Land that supports food, livelihoods, and movement.
Biodiversity that keeps these systems in balance.

Across the landscapes we work in, these systems are under pressure, but they are also resilient when protected with care and consistency.

In recent months alone (Q4 2025):
• 145 snares and 9 illegal fishing nets removed from key ecosystems
• 100 solar systems installed, reducing pressure on natural resources
• 295 children engaged in conservation education across Botswana, Kenya and Zimbabwe
• 40 farmers supported in building more sustainable livelihoods

This is a glimpse of what it takes to protect what sustains us - steady, agile and long-term work, shaped by people on the ground, supported by a global collective of passionate individuals.
