We educate parents and caregivers on safe sleep for infants which includes room sharing but not bed sharing, nothing in a crib except the baby and a sleep sack. We urge against sleep positioners, bumper pads, and blankets as all of these items can cause a suffocation risk. We also educate on how to REDUCE the risk of SIDS although there is no way to know which babies will be vulnerable to SIDS but

20 years ago today, this little boy changed my life in ways I never imagined. He was my third child and last child, and I never worried he wouldn't get the chance to grow up. I breastfed and bed shared not knowing that sleeping with my baby would cause his life to abruptly end at 26 days old! I treasure the 26 days he was alive. When he died, I didn't know a single person who lost their baby to bed sharing the way I had. I felt so alone those first 4 years after his death. I decided if no one was going to educate on the deadly dangers of bed sharing then I would have to stand up and make sure Jaleel was remembered and to help save other parents from my pain.

I don't know how many lives his story has saved but I know this little baby who didn't even get to live very long has helped other families watch their babies grow. His death has changed me forever, but I have been given the gift of helping other grieving families, so they know they aren't alone. That they did the best they could with the education they had at the time. Having one person who understands your pain and walking with you can make all the difference!

I don't know why he had to be the example, but I am thankful for having him, even if it was only for 26 short days! I treasure the memories of him and the impact he has left on those who knew him and those who only know about him.
Happy 20th birthday to my last baby who has made me who I am today. This little baby has shown me a deeper level of compassion and love. Who gave me a purpose after his death. I only had him for those 26 days, but those memories have carried me for the last 20 years and will continue to do so for the rest of my life!
