We educate parents and caregivers on safe sleep for infants which includes room sharing but not bed sharing, nothing in a crib except the baby and a sleep sack. We urge against sleep positioners, bumper pads, and blankets as all of these items can cause a suffocation risk. We also educate on how to REDUCE the risk of SIDS although there is no way to know which babies will be vulnerable to SIDS but

we do know that creating a safe sleep environment does help decrease the risk. "Because putting your baby to sleep right, helps ensure they make it through the night." We may be contacted through our email address at: [email protected]

One mother is making an effort to educate about safe sleep in Sacramento. She acknowledges that Black babies have a higher rate of infant deaths due to unsafe sleep. Between 2010 and 2015, 36 black babies died in their sleep in Sacramento County. In 16 of those cases, the coroner stated in the death certificate that the baby was sleeping with an adult or sibling. In eight cases, the baby was put to sleep on his or her stomach or was found underneath a pillow.

The Black Child Legacy Campaign and the Safe Sleep Baby initiative have helped reduce Black infant sleep-related deaths 54% across Sacramento County.
