***PRESS RELEASE***

On February 19, 2026, at approximately 7:39 p.m., officers with the Grandview Plaza Police Department initiated a vehicle pursuit near Cracker Barrel in Junction City. Officers from the Junction City Police Department and the Geary County Sheriff’s Office assisted by deploying tire deflation devices in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle.

At approximately 7:54 p.m., the driver abandoned the vehicle near Rucker Road and Fort Avenue and fled on foot into a tree line south of Rucker Road. When officers attempted to deploy a Taser, the individual produced a handgun and shot himself.

Officers immediately began providing medical aid and requested Junction City Fire/EMS. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives and Crime Scene personnel from the Junction City/Geary County Major Case Unit responded and are conducting a joint investigation into this incident. No officers or bystanders were injured. No officers discharged their fi****ms during this incident.

Homicide Investigation on West 4th Street

On January 17, 2025, at approximately 4:15 p.m., officers with the Junction City Police Department were dispatched to the 300 block of West 4th Street in Junction City, Kansas, in reference to a subject reported to be suffering from possible gunshot wounds.

Upon arrival, officers located John Day, a 66-year-old white male and Junction City resident, suffering from what was believed to be a gunshot wound. Mr. Day was transported to Stormont Vail Flint Hills Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

This incident remains an active investigation. The Junction City Police Department has identified and interviewed all individuals present during the incident. At this time, no arrests have been made.

There is no ongoing threat to the community related to this incident.

Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be presented to the Geary County District Attorney's Office for review to determine whether any charges are appropriate.

The Grandview Plaza Police Department, in collaboration with the Geary County Sheriff’s Office and the Junction City Police Department, completed an investigation during the nighttime hours of January 13, 2026. As a result of this investigation, several counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl—commonly known as “Dirty Thirties”—along with methamphetamine, ma*****na, THC wax, and drug paraphernalia were seized. Three arrests were made. This operation highlights the continued commitment of our agencies to work together to protect the community and combat the distribution of dangerous illegal substances.

The Junction City Police Department is investigating multiple reports of tire slashing that have occurred over the past several days in the 200 to 400 blocks of West 5th and West 6th Streets, with additional reports received from other nearby areas. These incidents are believed to have taken place between Sunday, September 7, and the morning of Saturday, September 13.

Officers have responded to numerous calls regarding damaged vehicles and continue to gather evidence related to these cases. At this time, the investigation remains ongoing.

The Junction City Police Department encourages residents in the affected areas to:

• Inspect their vehicles for any signs of damage.

• Review any home or business security camera footage from the past week that may capture suspicious activity.

• Report any information related to these incidents to the Junction City Police Department at (785) 762-5912.

Those wishing to remain anonymous can submit tips to Geary County Crime Stoppers at (785) 762-8477.
